That's impressive . My last husky was very intelligent and was constantly coming up with escape routes. My current one, not so much. He is three and hes never even came close to escaping. Once I left one gate wide open, poor guy went 15 minutes and never noticed

My grandfather had one set up for his Jack Russell. That little bastard would just get about a 100 foot running start and hit the boundary at full speed. Just kept on trucking yelping the whole time. He'd come back with dead batteries in the collar

I had a lab do the same, yelp mid air, hit the ground and keep on trucking. He would come back and sit about 10 feet from the fence and bark to let you know he was back so you could take collar off to let him back in the yard.

I thought so too but wouldn't say "good boy" bc my arse was the one rounding him up. Both Akitas could dig some impressive holes too; too big to plant a tree....seriously

Bet he was saying "dammit all to hell!"

Jack Russell.

I've heard of at least 2 other Jack Russell's doing the same.

For the OP, set the shock strength on as high as it will go. Dogs have a ridiculous pain tolerance.

They wanted $1500 to do my yard. I bought a pet safe unit from tractor supply. If wires are already run that is the hard part...

any idea how I could mark existing wires?

This wire locator is what you need to actually find the wire location. The collars will give an audible beep, you will have already paid for them and they will probably get you close enough.

You can get a used control box on ebay for $20-30. Buy a new collar for $65. Plug them up and rock and roll. Make sure collar and box are compatible. I have a petsafe system. Most boxes work for a multitude of collars.

When you plug the box up, it will tell you if there is a break in the line. If so, I'd run a new line rather than dig up the whole yard finding the break. Rent a trencher from Home Depot. Much better than a weedeater or edger, and does a better job. Buy 18 gauge stranded copper wire. Don't buy the stuff that says "dog fence", as it's 40% more $.

I fenced off my 3 acres for less than $400, that includes wire, collar, control box, and trencher rental. Been in place for over a year without a hiccup other than replacing batteries in the collar.

I agree with everything except the 18ga part, use 14ga, mine was 18 and I had the guy come back and put 14 down and he has never came back for a fence repair. I had way too many breaks with 18

bigger is better
I've got 12 acres enclosed and chasing wire breaks sucks
bury the largest gauge wire you feel comfortable with

We have a Petsafe wireless that works well. I'm not sure how the range compares to others.

12 acres? I'm interested in doing an area that exact size, what kind of controller are you using? I always assumed they were designed for the 1/2 acre to 1 acre size yards..

Just shave under it's neck. Also, they come with different probes.

Fuggituhboutit - the buried wire that is. Get a wireless Pet Safe system with the shock collar. $300 and set the circle radius on it up to 90 feet (180 ft diameter). Just change batteries a occasionally on the collar.
