Do they have whippoorwills in south Louisiana?

I heard something last night about 8:30. Thought it was one of my sons toys because it was pretty loud and clear and I was inside. Got up to investigate and realized it was outside. Opened the backdoor and it was in the woods about 20 yards behind the house. Obviously I couldn't see it. I've never heard that sound before in all my life in the outdoors. It moved to the side of the house called again for about 2 minutes and then moved further away. Then it was gone. The calls I looked up on YouTube have the same 'tone' but they're different pattern than what I heard.

I don't know if we have whippoorwills, but we hear quail all the time at my house.

Whip-poor-wills and Chuck-Will's-widows both migrate through south Louisiana.
The chuck wills have a different pattern to their call. Try that.
*Edited to add* Although it seems a bit late for migration.

I honestly never heard a whip-o-will until I moved to N.Alabama. Two things I heard when I moved to the Owens Cross Roads area....(1) Dueling Banjos at a neighborhood horseshoe tournament on night and (2) Whip-o-wills.
Having never heard either (live)...kinda scared me at first...but now the banjos don't play since they no longer have the tournament...and the whip-o-wills are kinda relaxing.
Heard something the other day that I hadn't heard in a long time (grew up south of Sulphur): A meadowlark. I imagined they all migrated North somewhat.

I had no idea that they were not down there. Have heard them all my life but have always live in TN, NW AL, or NE AL.
They are some really, really weird looking birds.

The slight chuck at the beginning is unique to them. I think, anyway.

I've never seen one, but have heard them all my life. That sound takes me back to being a kid and staying out 'til dark.
