Employee Complains: "Company bases promotions on merit instead of experience"

So. I'm reading an employee review of a company on Glassdoor today. The review gives 2 starts out of 5.
Primary complaint?
The company bases promotions on merit instead of experience.
I had to read it about 5 times just to ensure I wasn't misreading.
LOL

Must have been an old union worker.

Have some here like that. Union people who think their seniority allows them to do as little work as possible

Unions were critical in getting workers rights in this country. They fricked up when they protected incompetent, lazy workers. And considering workers rights are being diminished, we need them more now than in a long time. It's a damn shame.

Workers have it better than ever.

I can agree with your first sentence, but please explain how worker rights are being diminished.

I work with a guy who thinks like that. He was furious when I was promoted over him and didn't speak to me for about a month.

You are correct. I had one tell me they expect 3%-5% increase every year. I asked, "based on what?". They said, "inflation". I said, "no, merit".

Well, for one, raises being based on merit instead of seniority.

So it's not a government job?

Just wow. I got nothing else to say.

Good, leave him in the dust if he can't figure it out. In 10 years you will be in such a far better place than him you won't recognize each other.

So, what you're telling me, Ray, is that when you raise your prices to your customers to compensate for inflation, you then turn around and frick your employees by not giving them a commensurate cut? Their buying power drops, Ray, just like yours does when inflation occurs. To ask them to overperform just to keep their same standard of living is pretty shitty, Ray. Or, are you able to avoid raising your prices to stay below your competition by, again, fricking your employees and letting them bear your business's inflation burden? Either way, Ray, when you frick your employees long enough, you end up with your good employees going to employers that take care of them. Then, you're stuck with the shitty employees, Ray. Cost of living increases need to be kept separate from merit based raises. Losing good people to bad practices is how businesses get eaten alive.
Don't get eaten alive, Ray.
