Softball player do overreact, but...

Seems the umpire injected himself into the play afterwards, and tips the catcher off, to do the tag.

Are umpire allowed to yell out to a pitcher, who's thinking of balking, to throw to first instead of not throwing the ball to first?

Does an umpire tells a 2nd basemen to tag a runner who didn't tag 2nd base on the slide. Seems it would be wrong for an umpire to tip a 2nd basemen the runner didn't touch 2nd base while sliding. Is it up to player to figure out the wrong-doings or can a umpire say something?

About on level with college softball IMO. I hate the props and the yelling stupid shite. I also think it's stupid when baseball teams rush out of the dugout on a sac bunt. I find, though, that this really only happens with teams that love the sac bunt like Cal State Fullerton. How can you be engaged in a game if your running around with a stuffed animal and a mask on in the dugout then try to play? I think its absolutely retarded and I can't watch even one inning of softball because of it.

I recall having to have the pitcher come set, step off, and then throw it to the base.

That's what typically happens, but it doesn't have to happen that way. It just has to be before the next pitch, if the umpire hands the catcher the ball they can appeal at home plate, or throw to a base for an appeal there. It doesn't have to go to the pitcher first.

They probably do the come set, step off, throw to a base routine when other runners are on, to clearly indicate an appeal, and so it's not a balk.

Fun fact, if a pitcher wants to appeal a tag at third base, and throws it wildly into the stands, they can no longer appeal.

Technically once she reaches the dugout she is out. Anything before that she is allowed to return and touch home.

In baseball rules, there is nothing about the dugout.

It says, "(4) He fails to touch home base and makes no attempt to return to that base, and home base is tagged."

Generally umpires interpret that as, unless they immediately try correct it and to touch home base, they have not made an attempt. Celebrating with teammates and heading back to the dugout would not be making an attempt to return to that base.

I'm not sure I like this rule. It seems to me that you shouldn't be able to tag a player out like that with a ball that the umpire hands to you after a homerun. Seems like when the game ball is out of play, it should be a dead ball situation resulting in an appeal from the pitcher's mound. If softball does it differently and they did this according to the rules, then fine, but I'm not a fan of that rule.

Bama's #25 appears to have a nice arse.

I umpired for years and the way I understood it was once the player leaves the field of play, if they miss the bag, they are considered out once home is tagged.

Ive also never seen an appeal happen for missing a base by tagging the runner and not simply stepping on the bag.

That's not necessarily the rule though. It could definitely be less vague as written.

Yeah, a pretty unusual situation for sure, typically the ball doesn't get put back into play until the preceding play is over, in which case any runners would either still be on base or have left the field of play.

Either way, there should never be a tag play on a home run. That's just weird. Either the batter/runner should have been free to correctly touch home plate without being tagged out, or the appeal should have happened after the entire play was over prior to the next pitch.

The umpire knew exactly what he was doing. He watched closely, saw the runner NOT touch home plate, and handed a ball to the catcher. He looked pretty sure of himself, so I side with the umpire here.

The more epic meltdown was how Alabama ultimately lost the game. They were up 1 run in the bottom of the 7th. Ole Miss had 2 outs and bases empty. Alabama pitcher walks a batter...next batter hits a grounder to 3rd which should end the game but the 3rd baseman threw the ball halfway back to Tuscaloosa...runner on 1st scored and the batter ended up at 3rd. Game tied. Then the next batter got an infield single. Runner from 3rd scores....game over. Former LSU head coach Patrick Murphy and his Alabama squad go home losers. That must have been a hell of a bus ride home.

I'm impressed that big ole girl can run all the way around the bases. Should have given her the homer for that feat alone.
