Boxing really is dead in America

Joshua more likely to fight in China than USA
quote:
The question now is when he’ll do so in the U.S. And the posturing over that prospect began immediately from Joshua’s promoter, Eddie Hearn, who noted the largest post-World War II boxing crowd in England of 90,000 on Saturday and said, “I’m not sure you can do that in the U.S.
quote:
“I think China’s more likely than America for the next fight. We’ve had some conversations out there. Huge market, huge money,” Hearn said, adding, “Who’s making it in America?” When Canelo Alvarez was mentioned, Hearn sniffed, “Yes, but … [Joshua’s] looking at everyone.” The contention is timed perfectly as Showtime’s U.S. television rights deal with Joshua has just two fights remaining. The network’s executive vice president, Stephen Espinoza, said, “We’re in discussions for extensions beyond that. I’m sure the price just went up in the last couple of hours. And deservedly so.” Espinoza said he understands “that the Brits and other territories resent that the U.S. is the end-all and be-all. … But there are financial and other rewards in exposing Anthony to this vast population of 300 million people, most of whom have not yet discovered him.
quote:
Until his U.S. debut, Joshua said he wants Americans “to be excited about the division, the characters in the sport. They know we can fight now. We don’t back down, and now we’re back at the forefront.

doing a minor hijack. Any good boxing gyms for kids in Baton Rouge? Not mma and kicking and all that

Yeah, it will be interesting to see what Joshua can do to bring boxing back to major popularity. His pedigree is the same as so many legends, in terms of winning the Olympic Gold and then knocking everyone out.
He seems much more likable than any of the recent heavyweights, and the English really like him more than their other top guys.
I imagine his US debut will be against Wilder in Vegas or NYC some time in the next 3 years.

If I'm gonna watch something that's fixed, I'll just stick to pro wrestling.

Boxing isn't dead... If you have watched at all this year you would see that SHO and HBO have put on tremendous fights in the US. Joshua isn't even the biggest star right now... But will no doubt be in the future.

He will fight Wilder in MSG in a year or two most likely.

This.
Boxing is very alive or the PPV numbers wouldn't be What they are.
Btw, the Joshua/Vlad fight was one HELL of a fight. I've seen every I've of Vlad's pro fights and that's the best he's looked in a long long time.
I think someone with a little more speed and similar power as Vlad would give Joshua major problems.
Have to give the kid credit though, he got off the mat to beat a 10 year champion.

Stepfather and I went to Lafayette one summer around '83 or '84 and watched all day golden glove amateur boxing. I also think Southern University hosted some junior boxing competetion around that time too.
Seemed like you had Sugar Ray , Thomas Hearns, Ray Mancini, Leon Spinks, Gerry Cooney, and Larry Holmes doing that golden era prior to Tyson. My stepfather and I would meet up with some guys from calandros supermarket and watch PPV fights. Saturday nights were special. Now...I could not name three prominent fighters in the sport of boxing.

Well, you are missing out.
AS previously noted, the title fight between Joshua and Klitchko was an instant classic.
SPOILERS:...........
Great battle where each man had the other knocked down for standing 8 counts. Both fighters looked to be out, but Joshua rallied to TKO Klitchko. Great fight will be replayed on HBO. You need to watch it.

Welcome to 20 years ago.
I could name more boxers when I was 8 years old than I can now. Ali, Spinks, Leonard, Duran, etc. were so well known in the 70's you couldn't miss them. Then Holyfield and Tyson and others came along and they were always in the public eye. Now, you have to go looking for boxing info. Boxing is just very anonymous now.

Who really is the biggest star?
The HW division when good is king and he's on top of it right now.

in the HW division, none have the speed and power to match AJ, who also is technical enough to win gold at the Olympics.

Mayweather killed boxing. His style made it uninteresting yet profitable for himself
Posted on 5/1/17 at 4:36 pm to MottLaneKid
