Legit chronic pain people

All of the talk of over prescribing made me wonder with all of the focus on the opioid epidemic, what do legitimate chronic pain sufferers do to deal with their conditions?
I mean people with true 24/7, debilitating, and life altering chronic pain. I can imagine they immediately get thrown into the category with all of the other drug seekers, abusers, etc despite having medical proof that warrants aggressive treatment.
I just feel bad knowing that the pain pill seeking stigma has to be adversely impacting people who truly need this sort of treatment to deal with some really awful conditions.

There is no real evidence showing that opiates improve their function and are associated with a lot of potential harms.
There are a number of other therapies. Pain is a symptom, the cause should be treated. Opiates should be reserved for cancer and acute pain (sparingly).
That said, I continue to prescribe and wean a lot of people's pain meds, but the goal is not to continue a therapy that has harms and no benefit.

My dad has severe pain from spinal arthritis and degenerative disc disease. They gave him a prescription for hydrocodone, which he has never filled, and Tramadol, which he used once in a while but has stopped entirely. He gets by most days on aspirin and an anti inflammatories.

Just ignore it. Works most of the time.

It can suck
But I never needed prescriptions
If it got too bad I always found some extra mobility work to do for my hips and work on muscle imbalances in lower back and such

You won't die from pain

I started having arthritis in college. Literally have hurt my entire adult life. Diet has helped as much as meds have. Still sucks, and I know I will probably be disabled about the time I retire.

It's not that damn hard to ween yourself off painkillers over time. Some people just don't have self control.
They aren't for chronic pain and the doctors need to quit prescribing them for such.
One of these days our government will wake up and do what's right for the people. We need more research on cannibis for medicinal purposes.

There are many treatment options outside of opioids-non narcotic meds, therapies, injections, several different procedure options, etc. I worked at a pain clinic several years ago, and from my experience, the cancer and acute pain patients were FAR more likely to NOT want narcotic paid meds than the minimal pain pts.
Needless to say, it didn't take very long to tell the druggies apart from the true pain patients.

My doctor prescribed me 120 pills of 7.5 Norco NOV 2015, I've only used a 3rd of that to this date. If I were to need more, she'll write me a prescription because she knows I won't abuse it.

Do not rely on the medication itself. It is not healing your problem, only helping you manage activities of your daily life.
Get a co-management team of specialists together and "fix" the "problem" causing you to have pain. A nutritionist/dietitian (board licensed), therapeutic massage (board licensed), a podiatrist, a psychologist (not psychiatrist bc they don't talk just write more Rx and tell you to see a psychologist), a chiropractor, a physical therapist, an athletic trainer (licensed), if you do not have any contraindications then use a home TENS unit, cold and hot packs, correct your postural ergonomics against gravity (the way you sit, stand, bend, lift, reach, stand, and laying down), take beginners yoga classes. And there is much more however what I've listed is a healthy and safe start.

What the authorities have done,at least in N.E. AL is weed out the Pain Management Doctors that they deemed were over-prescribing.In some of those cases I agreed with them.
They also have the Doctors and especially the Pharmacies tied together in a Data Base so that "Doctor Shopping" is impossible.I can only get a 28-30 day supply filled from 1 Doctor during that period.I'm okay with that.
And,I don't see anyone at my PMD anymore that doesn't visibly look like they have a reason to be there.
I've accepted that Pain is something I have to live with.
I take Norco 10 mg as needed.Daily.

I would imagine some will commit suicide to escape the pain. I considered that years ago when no one believed I was really in pain and final test diagnosed a cervical nerve root compression. Surgery cured it, thank God.

Well for one I never go to the ER looking for narcotics. I politely request totadol/keterolac because I cant stand the pain and don't have time for the dr to play the "is she drug seeking" game. I'm not! Please give me my toradol or do me a favor and shoot me, the pain is that bad.
Even at that, some ahole DRs get indignant and tell me not to tell them what to do. Geez i am not telling them what to do, I am telling them what work well for me that isn't a narcotic. hell if they could give me a shot to numb the entire area, I'd be so thankful for that. I just want the pain to stop.
I never have a problem at the small rural hospital I go to because they know in all my years there that I have never requested narcotics for my kidney stone, migraines, broken foot, severe chest pains etc. They happily give me toradol and know I am not drug-seeking.
So I "live" my life in pain. i can no longer work because when the pain gets too bad I pass out. I should not be driving because of this. I get no disability check or help, i pay cash for my dr and meds and only have one doctor.
Thanks to my "Ginger Gene" not all pain-meds work for me anyway and i need double or triple the amount to get the slightest relief. I even woke up when i was under anesthesia having kidney surgery. There are no words t describe the pain of being cut open like that. i still have nightmares
I live a life in severe pain but luckily it won't last forever. The way things are going, I have about 5 years of life left.
So thanks junkies and paranoid docs who make my life a daily living hell.

Max out the nortryptylines/amytriptilines, gabapentin/lyrica, cymbalta. And obviously any intervention that could be precipitating the pain (epidural steroid injection, ablation, spinal cord stimulator, baclofen or tizanidine if from spasticity). After that, use opioids sparingly if possible.
Doctors (legit docs, not pill mills) got fricked when pain went from "the 5th vital sign/pain level is whatever the patient says it is/you have to treat it" to "oh no, everyone is ODing and on heroin, don't prescribe opioids".
