One thing we can all agree on is that Europeans are smug.
Surely the irony is not lost?
People are smug....Europeans are just honest with others about it....most Americans keep it to themselves...

Everyone knew this but you?
It ain't fair to make out like this is not pretty common....I would bet that most Americans are not aware of the fact that part of Ireland is part of the UK while the majority is not...
Either way one of the best trips you will ever make...especially if you can manage to work in some shooting or fishing....

People like you reinforce my belief that we need a poll test of some kind before we just let any dumbass vote.

I don't disagree
But, to engage in politics and not know that Ireland is split is pretty dumb.
How can you even grow up in the US and not realize that Ireland is a split country for hundreds of years?

The ira was literally bombing churches in Northern Ireland and you don't call that persecution?

No one is denying that happened. I simply question the rest of your little story, which conveniently glosses over the previous 800 years of history.

There are essentially two Belfasts too. The city is divided by a wall so the catholics and protestants can live separately. the gates are open during the daylight hours and closed at night. the houses along the wall have cages covering their backyards in order to keep thing from being thrown into their homes and yards. Sad really.

Ever heard of The Troubles?
Or the IRA? Or Irish Easter Rebellion of 1916?

Hard to believe posters are trying to pass this off as common knowledge.
I've never been to Ireland. Never had any particular desire to learn about the Protestant/Catholic struggle that went on there 800 years ago.
I get it you nerds love Boondocks Saints but not everyone is down with the whole Irish/Boston/Dropkick Murphy's/TheDepahted nonsense.
Part of Ireland is in the U.K. There is an Ireland that is its own country. Pretty easy to figure some of us could be unaware, that's all I'm saying.

I agree with you. Just for curiosity I just asked my wife and my father, both of whom have been to both Norther Ireland and the Republic of Ireland....and neither of them are aware that they are two separate nations. I would bet that this is the case with the vast majority of Americans.
I have spent a considerable amount of time in Edinburgh (Everything that is great about London at half the price) and I still don't understand why there is a Scottish Pound and a British Pound but I know if you pay with Scottish pounds you pay more than you do with British pounds....and the people act like it pisses them off to accept Scottish Pounds....and the dam things look nearly identical...
You don't find this as much in Gibraltar where they have their own pound note. Either seems to be accepted there as well as Euros....and of course dollars are welcome wherever you go...

Northern Ireland just wanted religious tolerance from the oppressive Catholic Irish regime that treated Protestantism like a crime. The Catholics were bombing Protestant churches on the regular. Eventually with a little help from mother England, Northern Ireland gained their freedom from Southern Ireland

You must be very young to not understand that Ireland has never wanted to be a part of England. This is very common knowledge.

There's no quicker way to blow your chance with a girl from the Republic of Ireland than to say she's a U.K. citizen. It's a lot less touchy now than a generation ago, but the Irish and British doesn't exactly like each other.
England has occupied part or all of Ireland since the 12th century. At least now it's voluntary by the six Northern counties. For a while, it wasn't voluntary at all. Just research Oliver Cromwell a bit.
