Democrats' urban machine

How have the democrats been so successful in establishing their 'machine' in so many (most) American cities?
Do the Republicans have anything similar?

Look at the clientele of the urban areas.

And their old standby of buying votes with other people's money

I imagine its a lot like the conservative machine in rural counties.

Yes. Rural America especially in the south.

I'm still waiting on a bus to show up and take me to the polls where, after I pull the lever for the GOP, a handler gives me a carton of cigarettes.

Or a fried chicken lunch...

Urban areas typically draw people from many different backgrounds. I think being around people from different backgrounds everyday, generally makes people a little more liberal. Even Republicans in urban areas are generally more liberal than rural republicans.

It's been that way for 200 years

This is true. I live in rural America. We meet once a month. We organize our plan to elect right wing fascists. It goes like this:
Gertrude: "So, who's running for city council?"
Zach: "We can't vote. We're not in a city."
Stan: "That's not fair. We should protest."
Zach: "How"
Bill: "Let's let all of our dogs run loose until a liberal hits one and then we kill the bastard."
George: "That won't work. Our dogs already run loose and they're too smart to get hit."
It's very sad.

It's pretty simply black voters. Blacks vote democrat at like a 85-90% clip and outside of the south are mostly concentrated in urban areas.
Also 75-80% of big cities have a well regarded University which leads to more liberal/democrat voters.

The rural and suburban machine.

Pretty telling you equate "urban" voters with black voters.

Rural and most of suburbia are federal government minimalists. They don't need nor want much of it...maybe some interstate highways and defense. However urban America are federal government gluttons.

Black voters have a much larger proportion of the vote in urban areas than they do in rural areas (except in the deep south).

USDA subsidies?
Plus you have to factor in that it costs a lot more per capita to build a bridge that sees 100 cars per hour (rural) than a bridge that sees 10,000 cars per hour (urban) if those bridges are being funded primarily through gas taxes, for instance.
Also there are a lot of rural areas that are very poor with high concentrations of SNAP, Medicaid, etc. Regardless of stereotypes, the rural areas in this country still rely on lots and lots of federal funding.
