Because it's on the eve of their big election night and they have super strict gun control. If the perpetrator is a Muslim, this could be just the type of event that pushes Le Pen over the top to victory. Le Pen winning means France likely deports millions of Muslims and pulls out of the EU, which could mean the end of the European Union itself. It's a big big big deal.

Make no mistake...ISIS *wants* people like Le Pen in power because it makes their job of recruiting much easier.
Better to take a hardline stance and work to get it under control than to take limpwristed one.

Because it is at the hands of yet another slimy GD, excuse me Associated Press, Allahdamned a-hole Islamist...these vermin need all the exposure they can be given so I say good for Drudge!

Decatur you are a delusional. Our culture's are in total conflict with each other they treat woman and figs like 2nd class people I'd they don't kill them. You may see how that would effect you.
You cannot coexist with someone who's values say you convert or die.....

It is FRANCE. Two officers and they surrender to ISIS.
This is such a stupid misconception- they surrendered to the Germans at a time when no one in the world could stop the Germans and thry lost colonies (like every other European country) other than that France has pretty strong martial history. Germany is 0-2 in World Wars how come people don't mock them? Hell they lost so bad both times their country was partioned.

Off the top of my head:
-Early reports say shooter(s) may have been Belgian (calls into question free movement mandated by EU
-ISIS involvement at a time when France is still in a state of emergency. They have had a heightened security posture for years now.
-If there is a shooter at large the situation could draw parallels to the manhunt which ended at the marais Jewish grocery store
-killing with an ak 47 on the champs elysees is equivalent to killing someone on Pennsylvania ave with a class 3 weapon. Even then, class 3 can be bought in the us by some, but ak 47's are not allowed in France.
-Tourism in France and particularly Paris has taken a large hit due to security concerns (specifically among Asian tourists).
-cops getting gunned down in Western Europe are exceedingly rare events relative to the US.
-Marine Le Pen had been in a twitter fight with the eu recently, this action fits right into her warnings.
-the London bridge incident didn't kill many either, but it was certainly news worthy, and was far more covered by big media
-the other two rivals in the election with a shot at the runoff will be seriously challenged to answer this news in a strong manner relative to Le pen.
-this election may have one of the lowest participation rates in modern French history. The shooting will only energize Le pen's base and may encourage apathy on the part of the middle of the electorate (not willing to vote for NF, but can't stomach the left's business as usual attitude towards terrorism).
When did body counts become the key measure? Does the location (most famous street in the world), method (ak), or perpetrator (possible foreign citoyen) not carry weight?

This is such a stupid misconception
One visit to a French church built before 1940 would correct this line of thinking. Just seeing the extreme loss of life in WW1 and massive casualties sustained in such a short time at the beginning of WW2 gives anyone who has seen it a reminder of how much France bled.
The psychological impact of losing more land in a month than had been lost in all of WW1's worst days can't be discounted. Additionally, demigods such as Gen Petain being the face of partitioned peace made Vichy an almost tolerable alternative to continuing the fight in a large scale geurilla way across the middle and south of France.
Accusing the French of being surrender chimps is extremely ignorant. Poor tacticians? Yeah. Weaklings? No. People should read up on the entire struggle of the French vs the German unified states starting with the Franco-Prussian war. The siege of Paris, bloodletting in WW1, and huge casualties sustained as the nazis steamrolled around the maginot line savaged the collective ability to resist.

Not anymore than I'd want people to be worried about traffic fatalities - which happen many times more often.

Everyone knows that is true but acknowledging it would mean the end of all those jokes about the French.
It's the same with the Irish.
Everyone knows all Irishmen aren't drunks but acknowledging it would mean the end of all those jokes about Irishmen drinking.
For example, what is an Irish breakfast?
Answer - A bottle of Irish whiskey and a potato.
An Irishman drinks the bottle of Irish whiskey for breakfast and saves the potato for lunch.
