Rover Pipeline spills more than 2 million gallons of drilling fluid one month in.

EPA definitely needed an entire overhaul, but do we have something in the works to help the clean up and make sure this is handled properly? And make sure this stuff is more preventable.

Do you have any suggestions?

Started building a pipeline a month ago?
Already has spill?
Spill is not oil or gas, but drilling fluid?
Something sounds weird about this story. Seems like maybe it was just a spaghetti string to get drilling fluid from one location to another, not a full on 48" buried oil pipeline across the nation.

Drilling fluid.
So basically a mixture of mud (?) and other products that really aren't harmful to the environment.

Drilling Fluid:
quote:
In geotechnical engineering, drilling fluid is used to aid the drilling of boreholes into the earth. Often used while drilling oil and natural gas wells and on exploration drilling rigs, drilling fluids are also used for much simpler boreholes, such as water wells. Liquid drilling fluid is often called drilling mud. The three main categories of drilling fluids are water-based muds (which can be dispersed and non-dispersed), non-aqueous muds, usually called oil-based mud, and gaseous drilling fluid, in which a wide range of gases can be used.

It's just drilling fluid. That stuff won't hurt anything

No, let big business take care of itself, free market, less government.

Post an MSDS of Drilling Fluid?

This isn't a "the pipeline shouldn't have even happened" discussion. There's two sides to these things and one side doubles down that the pipelines are perfectly safe for the environment. When something like this happens no one should be flipping out on the messenger about bringing it up. It happened. We dismantled the EPA, I even agreed with that, I was just asking if we have something to ensure this is maybe more preventable or someone is held accountable in the future.

You have no clue wtf you are talking about...

I actually didn't even know about this pipeline. I had to drive home and back the other day and took two different country routes about 40 miles apart. I came across massive pipeline being installed both times.
It was not operational on those parts of the line so I was surprised when saw this story.

regs
stringent regs that control how such companies may do their business.
all the adolescents side with the companies. DONT TELL ME WHAT TO DO. I KNOW HOW TO DO X.
PS. its all about the benjamins. ILLth is the idea that companies muck up our land and water and air, and the people pay for it in hidden and not so hidden costs.
the regs make the companies bear the cost.
ending regs means you, the taxpayer make up for all the mistakes companies do.
Dems make companies be more responsible. onerous regs. tsk.
Republicans pretend that nothing really ever goes wrong. they are kissing WTO butt. You pay the price in bad water, diseases, bad air, diseases, and the company keeps the cash.

For perspective, 2 mill gallons is about 400 tanker trucks. (not commenting on the issue really, just throwing this in there)

Just looked up what kind of drilling fluid they were using. (There are many types of drilling fluids) It was a clay-mud. Probably just tore up the environment!
Clay Mud
"It's a natural clay mud used as a lubricant for drilling, commonly known bentonite," Lee said.
ETA
I should add that it does, indeed have an impact on water quality. But it's not exactly an ecological disaster.
Alexis Daniel, spokeswoman for Energy Transfer Partners, the developer of the Rover Pipeline, said the drilling mud that was released is made up of natural clay and water and is non-toxic and it is not harmful to the environment.
