Maybe we work out a 3 way trade with the hawks and send them Ingram we get butler, pats get Sherman. Hawks maybe get a third from us and another pick from pats and then we sign AP. Draft a running back at some point in the draft.

That doesn't make sense on Seattles end. They want draft capital, and they have Rawls/Lacy.

It doesn't make sense for anyone but the Saints.

True, I forgot about the lacy signing

Yeah I don't think the pats have any real interest in Sherman either. Three team trades are incredibly rare anyway

Question: if traded to saints and we have a long term deal for butler, is that an extension off of signed 1 yr tender deal?

Didn't look at page 3 yet but TB is sort of correct.

It can honestly go either way. They can leave this year alone (but the pro rated signing bonus gets added) or they basically "rip it up" and start over.

I think it'll settle around the $4-5 mil mark for this year's cap hit either way.

Does anyone think it will realistically happen?

Just seems far fetched because there hasn't been any news.

What if he got traded to Saints without a new contract?

Technically he is being traded on his tender contract.

Now they definitely will agree in principal on a long term deal before he gets traded, but he cannot sign it until after he is traded.

That is unless the Pats do the extension before he gets traded but that is SUPER rare for it to happen like that.

Yes, Butler has held out singing that RFA tender this long for a reason. He signed it now because he is likely open to being traded to us. I see no other reason for him to end his holdout right now and be willing to play on a year deal for New England for less money.

quickly looked up the exact definition of RFA. that tender and its terms are only for the Patriots. theres no way for it to transfer to a new team.

Except that is exactly what happens. When he signs the tender it becomes a one year deal for that price. Any team that trades for him gets him on that deal.

No where in the cba does it say he isn't traded on that deal (because he in fact is).

Now the Pats could extend him before he gets traded but that is super rare.

Well he held out in hope of signing a big offer sheet. But I agree he's open to a trade

That was my point.

If the Pats are the only team that could have him under the tender contract then it would be impossible to trade him. The Pats would have to sign Butler to the deal that Butler-Saints agreed to, then trade him to Saints.

Nope. Once the tender is signed it becomes a normal 1 year deal for that price, and can then be traded and/or renegotiated.

95/100 he gets traded and then we extend him, with or without touching this year (though a portion of the signing bonus will hit this year regardless).

If the Saints trade for Butler, sign AP and have a decent draft class then I'd say this off-season was a A+

It would be nice if Lasco can make the step as the change of pace back this year too, or a draft pick

Did you just say "Nope" and then agree with everything I said?

There was no hold out, and he's said all along he would play this year. There was almost no chance he would have pulled a Logan Mankins.

His agent is pretty new at this whole NFL thing, so it could be that. I mean just last week reports were coming out he was thinking of hiring a new guy.

quote:

He signed it now because he is likely open to being traded to us.

Which makes no sense because technically they cannot discuss trades unless he's signed. What benefit is obtained by not signing his tender?

The entire tender thing makes zero sense, and until Butler admits he was planning on holding out, I can only see it as incompetence from his agent.

No I disagreed pretty plainly. He gets traded under the tender contract and then we extend him.

That's exactly what I was pointing out.

Some other poster said only the Pats could have him under the RFA tender contract and I pointed out repeatedly that would exclude him form being traded and didn't make sense.
