Uh. The game is safer now compared to those guerilla ball bats.

quote:1998 or 1999? I can't remember which year that way. I know the 1998 team hit a HR in every single game and every position player at at least 1.
Most college baseball fans feel that the straw that broke the camel's back with regards to gorilla ball was in a NC game one year, when both teams had run out of pitching, USCw won by a score of 20+ to 13 or so. With multiple HR's by both teams. The fact that LSU has the record for most HR's in a season at 180 says how out of whack hitting had gotten. Brandon Larson once hit 40 HR's and came in second.

Think it was 1998, because by 99 they had new bats. Think the score of that championship game was like 21-14

Thanks cru-cru, That's exactly how I see it. When I go I like giving high fives, love to see the good hitters hit which leads to good defensive plays--more high fives. Just want to enjoy good hitting and good defense and have fun. I do not want college ball to be like pro ball.

Good hitters still hit. Good hitters can hit with anything you put in their hands. Ralph Rhymes would of hit base hits up the middle with a stick and bottle caps. What the new bats and balls took out was the mediocre hitters with some pop in their bat. People talk about Papierski on this board a lot. Think about how many balls he has hit to the warning track. Those are home runs with the old bats. He would be considered a decent to good hitter if some of those balls went over the fence.
It is similar to basketball changing the three point line. Pure shooters can make a three no matter where you put that line but inconsistent shooters would struggle with just that minor change.

188 home runs in a season will do that. One LSU player had 40 HR in a single season.
Ameritrade in Omaha sucks.
Needs to be a compromise between the two extremes. Make the CWS tourney fun again.

The real issue is teams that thrive on the long ball. If/when they get to Omaha they're screwed.

LSU should not be about tweaking and tinkering lineups, LSU should be about fired up excitement and motivation. We simply have the wrong coach
You do know that skip did this all the time. He would tinker all throughout the season to see which lineup worked the best. He would put random people in at crucial times to see if they could hit or pitch. Everything was preparing for the post-season. The biggest difference I see is each of their emphasis on the SEC tournament. Skip would rather 2 and Q to rest everyone.

For the love of god, it's "would've," which is a contraction for "would have."
There's no such thing as "would of."
Damn.

If you're a pitcher, which bat would you want being used if someone hits a line drive right back towards your face?
I understand your point, but if you're in the line of fire, wear a mask, like catchers and umpires do. No reason to drastically change the game, when a small pitcher's mask can solve the problem.
I just heard all the purists and manly-men gasp, but I don't care.

IMO, I think they went too far with the bats. The ones used in 2009 and prior I think was the right balance. The real problem though is the new stadium in Omaha.
Those bats were too jucied up. Tyler freaking Hanover hit 5 home runs with those as a freshman. He was like 5'5 160 and hit 3 home runs the next 3 seasons combined after the switch to the new bats.

Youre arguing against the laws of physics. The ball came off the bat and lot faster using the old bats. That simple fact made them less safe.im not arguing for or against but having the ball come off the bat a little slower makes it safer. Would you rather get hit by a car traveling 10 mph or 30 mph?

quote:I have a physics degree. I wasn't mentioning physics. I'm asking you how many injuries do you think were taking place with those bats?
Youre arguing against the laws of physics.
quote:Fine... Let's talk physics then. Deichmann can hit a baseball 110+ mph. Most guys are in the 90s. 90 mph (132 fps) to 110 mph (161 fps) in 60 ft is a difference of 80 milliseconds. A blink takes approx 300 milliseconds. Again, how many injuries does that equate to?
Would you rather get hit by a car traveling 10 mph or 30 mph?

Thats not the point. Having the ball come off the bat at a slower speed lessens the chance of injury. Which ball does more damage if they hit the same exact spot and at the same trajectory? A ball traveling 120 mph or a ball traveling 90 mph?
Who knows how many injuries it saved, but a remedial knowledge of physics tells you an object traveling at a higher speed carries more kinetic energy and can cause more damage.

quote:No you don't.
So do I.
quote:That's exactly the point. It's a matter of injuries and reaction time. A ball coming at you 90 mph can break your face. Ask Deichmann...
Thats not the point.
quote:Why are you using 120? None of the balls were going that fast. That's not what the bat changes did. The old bats had larger sweet spots with more trampoline effect throughout. This means more balls at 100-110 mph which when hit at the correct angle, left the park. Balls are STILL hit that hard but with less frequency. My point is that balls coming at a pitcher anywhere from 90 to 110 mph will do not get to the pitcher at significantly different times. If it's going to hit them in the face, it will hit them in the face. Both speeds do significant damage. But it didn't happen nearly as often as officials wanted people to believe.
Which ball does more damage if they hit the same exact spot and at the same trajectory? A ball traveling 120 mph or a ball traveling 90 mph?
No one had a problem with the first bat changes. Everyone agreed it was getting out of hand. So they put in standards. First the size of the bat, then the alloy, then physical thresholds. It was perfect in 2009. But they changed it again hiding behind "safety" which was a fricking cop out but it meant that there was no way the could go back. Which is why they've now tried changing the ball to allow for more spin, which causes a higher flight and what officials and coaches had hoped for more distance. It hasn't had the effect most had wanted.

Holy shite.
Which ball carries more kinetic energy?
A ball traveling 100 mph?
A ball traveling 120 mph?
quote:
Both speeds do damage with neither more specific than the other.
No shite. But the ball traveling slower is SAFER because it carries less energy.
Which is what I said....
