I like Son Volt, but I love Wilco. Wilco's sound is much more rounded, and interesting. It's not even close for me.

Son Volt is in my top tier and Trace is in my GOAT territory.
Wilco just has never worked for me, I'm not sure why.
Two different bands and people have different taste.
No reason for the bad blood between Farrar and Tweedy to spill over and make people choose sides. Both seem like douches to be honest. Wilco may not work for me but they are much better than most of the other bands people are listening to these days.
A friend once compared Farrar and Tweedy to Lennon and McCartney after the Beatles split. That may be hyperbole but there are some underlying similarities too.
