ABC Board considers raising liquor markup to support DAs, courts

The Alcoholic Beverage Control Board on Wednesday will consider raising the markup on liquor from 30 percent to 35 percent of cost, a move that would add roughly $1 to the price of a $30 bottle in ABC stores.

The money raised by the increased markup would be designated for district attorneys and the court system under language included in the state budget, which is pending in the Legislature.

District attorneys would receive $6 million and the Unified Judicial System would receive $2.2 million for fiscal year 2018, which starts Oct. 1.

More of the story in the link.

I know for a fact in my JD that citations are way down for a couple of reasons. Much of those fines fund the courts.

Now all the "small government conservatives" in Montgomery can pat themselves on the back for not technically raising taxes.

These same idiots will go on TV and complain about socialism and communism, all while supporting and expanding the continued state monopoly over a legal good.

Mississipi baws what is your liqour prices at now? Mid nineties-2000 I believe you were 3 or 4 bucks cheaper for JD or Dickel type whiskey than Bama back in the day.

Why is the State of Alabama in the liquor distribution business in the first place? I've never understood this. The whole ABC organization should be shutdown and have its assets auctioned off ASAP.

Not sure about Mississippi, but Georgia's liquor prices average around $10-$20 cheaper than Bama's. Same with Florida.

It's ridiculous. I stop at the liquor store anytime I'm in Georgia to stock up.

Because they make a fortune off of it.

The guy that owns the company I work for also owns a distillery and he walked me through all the stuff you have to do to sell a product to tABC. It is nothing more than a legalized criminal organization.

Yep. Any proposal to end the ABC will be met with "But, but, but...it's one of the only profitable areas operated by the state." Well, no shite. You've monopolized a legal, in-demand product, jacked up the prices beyond their market values, and threatened, at gunpoint and with prison time, anyone who would attempt to produce, sell, or transport it cheaper than ABC. Of course it's profitable for the state. It's a profitable business model for the mafia and cartels, too.

Money and giving family members jobs. ETA

You would be shocked at how many legislators make money off rent for state store locations.
