Here is their response to my email which I received about 45 minutes ago: (the bolding and underlining are mine.)

As it states in the email we will be monitoring traffic and if it becomes an issue we will scrap the test and go back through the process of allowing fans to show their passes as they come through the lot as normal.

This is just a test run that we are hoping if it works we will be able to provide fans more options with their parking passes.

If we are able to come up with a plan for scanning we hope that this will be able to provide options in the future for fans to be able to electronically forward parking permits on game by game basis similar to what is allowed for tickets as well as offer print at home options for Regional/Super Regional games we host.

It is just a trial run and the parking manager will be there to monitor and again, if it causes more traffic, we will discontinue the scanning process.

So they are doing it so they can either sell more parking permits last minute or permit holders can sell their parking permit on StubHub and LSU gets a cut of the re-sale revenue....
