Early signing period for football a terrible idea

As we can see with basketball, an early signing period, or at least a signing period that happens before December, is a bad idea. Pretty much 80% of basketball signees sign in the fall. By the time all the season finishes and coaching changes take place, the cupboard is bare for any incoming coach, and his old team is stuck with a bunch of kids that may not want to be there anymore and are looking to get out of their LOI. This same thing would happen with football. I hope they keep the signing period after the season is over in football.

It wouldn't be mandatory.

Coaches can be fired before December. See Les Miles.
Coaching changes will happen any time of the year. The kid doesn't have to sign early. What do you say of the coaches who get fired the day after national signing day? What makes that situation any different?

disagree. Lock in your spot.

Disagree. I think it's a great idea especially when it's only an option.
I do think the school staff has a responsibility to make sure the recruit (and family) is indeed ready at that time. But that's just a change by months of the same decision point they had to come together on anyway. Coaches come and go anyway; the idea that a coach, head or position, will always be there is something you can't count on. Many kids sign and then the day after NLI period opens coaches get fired. Same net result whether they sign in Feb or Dec.
For the recruit it allow him to exit the recruiting process early, which some would rather do to avoid all the BS, and go ahead and become more of a teammate than a recruit. Frees up some "tools" and privileges I assume even if enrollment is still what matters most.
Simply put, by simply moving the date I don't see it as an issue.
ETA: on the heels of this hopefully they fix the stipend racket

Good luck with that. Coaches would put extreme pressure on kid to sign early. The problem is because football takes up the entire fall, kids would either have to visit in the summer before the season or not take all his visits. Honestly, what's wrong with the current signing date.

I kind of have mixed emotions on this one. If there was an early signing period this year LSU would probably not have gotten Jacob Phillips(#1 ILB) who was committed to Oklahoma.
Schools will put a lot of pressure on every commit to sign the early LOI. Can't blame them either. If a guy is committed but refuses to sign when given the opportunity there is a big chance he won't sign anyway.

Or they just don't sign early and do what they want. There are kids that take their visits during the fall. Jacob Phillips for example and pretty much every single Early Enrollee.

It's not mandatory for basketball either, but the majority of kids sign the first chance they get because (a) they want to lock up their spot and (b) it's before their season really starts up in high school, so they can get the whole thing over with and focus on their senior season. The problem is the fall signing period is almost 6 months before the spring signing period. You always have coaching turnover and a bunch of kids stuck with a school they don't want to play for and trying to get out of their LOI, which isn't guaranteed. I kinda wish they would do like football, and make basketball signees sign after the season is over.

You understand the risk when you sign early, it's a game in itself. There are pros and cons to both sides of the argument. If the rules switch, they switch and everything adapts to it.

very simple, if the head coach leaves you should be able to change but only if it is the head coach. It is not rocket science

I think they need to keep it to midyear enrollees as the only early signees. Basically they do it now, because they send the financial paperwork in so they can enroll right after the holidays at the start of spring semester, which is before "signing day"

I agree, but schools are not obligated to release the player. Now, nobody wants a teammate that doesn't want to be there, especially new coaches that probably have to clean house. However, we hear stories of players being released, or not being released every spring. Schools hold off releasing these kids until after their new coach has exhausted every avenue of convincing the kid he needs to stay put. Only when the parents, player, and possibly lawyer raise a big enough stink do some of these letters of intent actually get released.

Nothing, but giving kids the option to sign in December would provide many with a means of ending the recruiting process.
This isn't basketball where the recruiting class is a handful of players. Teams will sign 20-30 players a year. There isn't going to be some huge issue with locking in their spot.

Exactly!

I don't care either way. The reality is the "elite" athletes are going to command more money if a university wants his signature earlier. College football is already out of control with the under the table dealings, so just wait until this starts because it's going to be crazy!

There's probably a good reason for it but can somebody tell me why there needs to be a signing period at all? Why can't we just let them sign their LOI when they're ready to commit?
