Dons downtown does have the best old fashioned in town. That's a fact.
Now you're speaking my language.

Don's is for people who haven't tasted quality seafood. I guess that's because I grew up in New Orleans where Don's is not even considered when looking for a decent seafood restaurant.
To say the food there is not decent is ridiculous. Don's is a typical old local family seafood restaurant. It's not a place to go for creative fare. If you're looking for good fried shrimp, oysters, gumbo, bisque, oysters or shrimp en brochette, typical boiled seafood salad, seafood stuffed eggplant, seafood platters and the like, then it's fine.
I don't know how it would get all the business it gets if it wasn't decent because it's not cheap though the lunch menu is very reasonably priced. Every time I'm there to pick up the frozen bisque, the place is crowded usually with some folks sitting on that bench in the lobby area, waiting.

I know its touristy, but I would go to Prejeans. They are fairly consistent.
Meh

Not in Lafayette, so this rec is for some other time when you just want *near* Lafayette and want something different.
Cafe Jefferson at Rip Van Winkle Gardens.
Their seafood bisque is rich and delicious and full of crab meat and shrimp. Divine! Get a cup of bisque and a half of one of their big sandwiches. The scenery is nice, too.
ETA: Great list, fin.

That's a list of restaurants, some good, but the majority aren't near the caliber of or suitable alternatives to Don's, not to mention many aren't open on Sunday for lunch for a party of four, or serve beer and wine, which is what the OP is looking for. Taco Sisters, Agave, Blue Dog, Pop's Poboys, Olde Tyme, even Bread and Circus, Rock n Sake and Johnson's (where there isn't even a dining room)? No. Just no. And if anybody questions why Cochon didn't make it in Lafayette, this list provides all the explanation you need.

I'd just skip the meal before I ate at don's
Posted on 3/21/17 at 7:17 pm to bdevill
They'd all have to be closed for me to eat at Don's
Posted on 3/21/17 at 7:22 pm to yellowfin
Give em the amount of time that Don's has been serving, and they will be.

I also like Dwyers for lunch/brunch. It's a very casual place but the food is pretty damn good.
I like Dwyers a lot as well.

Yes, dons seafood hut is another good one.
Always liked Don's Seafood Hut. Lived nearby in Riversbend and would often call the wife to meet me for lunch there. Great gumbo and a couple of drinks. Then to the house for a nooner. Not much work those afternoons.
