Other than the fact that he is a free agent next season. He could hold out for 9 games this season, play only 7, and then be a free agent. Highly doubt the Pats are going to franchise tag a player who just sat out half of the season.
He'd also torch his value, and the Pat's would get a compensation pick of some sort. Logically that makes zero sense, and this doesn't seem to be a Logan Mankind type situation yet.

Mankins was as burned of a bridge as th y come and still signed an extension

There's lots of incentive to trade Butler. He made that pretty clear when he came to NOLA for 2 days. He wants to play here and he knows we will pay him around what Gilmore was paid.
He knows the Pats would pay him but not nearly in the ballpark of what Gilmore is. That's why there's incentive. They know he's just going to walk next season or the next so why not get a first round pick for him. Now there's rumors Revis might be going back to the Pats.
It's a matter of time before he wears Black and Gold, it's just a matter of what the Saints give up in order to get him, 11 or 32. I hope not 11 but when SP and Loomis like a guy they pretty much do whatever it takes to get him as we've seen.

Ian Rappaport
Well this doesn't sound good for us

#Patriots have had no talks with #Saints or Butler. They won't until he signs his tender. NE may just say, sign an offer sheet & let's see.

Choice for #Patriots: Butler signs an RFA offer sheet & they match (or don't & get a 1). ... Or there is no offer sheet & he plays for $3.9M

lol. I don't believe this even for a second.

I very much doubt the Saints and Pats haven't been talking

Every scenario imaginable has been reported at least once. Have fun deciphering what the truth is
I'll take my chances with anyone other than Rap or Lombardi though.

Of course that's what the Pats are going to tell him. If they say otherwise then it's against league policy

Saints Talk trying to make sense of this trade

Or he signs his tender and then the Patriots trade him for our 32 or 42. Pretty simple

quote:Exactly. Why would we waste our time negotiating a contract with Butler without knowing the parameters of what NE would want in return. These reporters spew such ridiculous crap that you wonder if even they believe what they write.

Rap just told holder we didnt know how to use cooks and get him the ball. Wow

Ian Rapoport literally has no fricking idea about anything that relates to the New Orleans Saints.

I know. But even by his standards that was really bad

You're crazy dude
David never sniffed being an all pro corner. He was a serviceable slot corner that tanked in our scheme.
Butler was PFF's #4 corner in the entire NFL.
Apples and oranges

Yeah I mean it isn't like he averaged over 900 yards and something like 7 tds per year in his 3 years here, the first in which he got injured.
Clearly we just couldn't get him the ball.

NFL Research posted this-
quote:
Malcolm Butler allowed a passer rating of 89.1 in coverage last season (62nd among 110 players targeted 50+ times) LINK …

Weird. I had him at 74. @dougkyed had him at 76. @jeffphowe had him at 74. @MarkDanielsPJ had him at 73.

PFF had him at 78.2, including the playoffs. No way that 89 passer rating NFL Research has is right for Butler.
That stat is being debunked all over Twitter right now
