Where will you be riding? Bikes are like boats in that they're very specialized to what they'll be used for. For most people, a 29er hardtail is a best bet. Get one with hydraulic disc brake instead of mechanical disc brakes. Giant isn't a sexy name but they are usually the best value because they're the biggest and they are one of a couple of factories in Taiwan that do all of the frame welding.

Anyone have any opinions on the 2017 Trek Marlin 7? I am looking for a median-priced hardtail and am between that and the Specialized Rockhopper Comp.

Needs some recs on a mid-ish level bike. Willing to spend $500 - $700 or so.

I picked up a Giant Talon last year for $500. Was last years color scheme so price was reduced. Its been a great bike for the trails around here.

Local bike shops tend to put last year's models on sale when the new ones roll out each year. Try to find yourself a nice 2016 trek at Capitol Cyclery. I was able to get a Raleigh Talus 29er for $400 when they were trying to get rid of them.

I'm in DFW......there are lots of trails around to ride. I'll probably also ride a good bit on paved trails also.

Good choice. I've upgraded to a Specialized stumpjumper and love it. Enjoy getting hooked on it!

If your in DFW, you need to go to Richardson Bike Mart. They'll let you test drive all the bikes and get you set up. Bought a specialized stump jumper FSR carbon comp 29er this past winter from them. They'll work with you on the price also.
