First off, I like butler and hope we get him.
But doesn't anyone find it a little weird that butler is supposedly so good but the pats went out and gave Gilmore the big contract and not their very own SB hero?

Not at all given their history

The concerns for giving up a 1st and the necessary contract to sign Butler are legitimate. However, the opportunity outweighs the risk, IMO. I would feel extremely uneasy going into the season with the same group of CBs from last year, plus a rookie or two. Our top 3 CBs (Breaux, Williams, Swann), have missed a combined 65 out of 96 games the last two seasons. The need for a quality CB is there, and we have the opportunity and resources to fill it.

They usually don't sign long term big contract and will get someone else for cheaper.
They basically just gave Gilmore the contract butler wanted

The Saints would be insane to pay anymore than a 3rd round pick. YOU CAN SIGN HIM NEXT YEAR FOR FREE. To me a 3rd is expensive seeing that you are paying for a 1 rear rental.

Not if he gets slapped with a franchise tag.

Do you think we are going to trade for him and only give him a one year contract. You know that isn't happening right?

CB is one of the hardest positions, if not the hardest, to predict in the draft. It is always a crapshoot. I'd prefer the guy that proven he can play at a high level.

B) You can compete to sign him next year assuming he doesn't leave NE this year and that NE doesn't slap the franchise tag on him next year (not likely, but possible)
quote:How is it a 1-year rental? It's not a trade to pick him up on the last year of his contract. Any team that gets him for NE's price is going to have to sign him to a new deal.

They could have given Butler the contract and had just him, Signed Gilmore and then have Butler for 1 more season at $3.91 million, or sign Gilmore and trade Butler for a high draft pick. Sounds to me that the Patriots are doing what benefits them the most. I don't think it says anything negative about Butler. They are just getting the most value out of him that they can.

Everyone disagreeing with the Saints giving up the 32nd pick for Butler, when the Patriots wanted a straight up deal Cooks for Butler.
Since now its going to take a draft pick, I'll be surprised if the Pats get anything less than a 2nd round pick. The 32nd pick is in play....

So can every other team, and he gets to choose where he wants to play. We trade for him, we own him. He already has 2 rings and is 27 years old. He wants money now. So what's going to happen when a team comes along and throws $15 mil at him when we can only throw $11 or $12? (See Josh Norman last year). This is the right move. A second would be ideal, but giving them back 32 would be just fine. And would cap a so far good-great offseason on paper.

right. The Saints don't hold all the cards.
Similarly, Butler can't demand the Patriots trade him or give him a long term deal. As a restricted Free Agent, he faces two real choices...play under market value this year (for about 4M) and enter Free Agency next year, or convince NE or someone else to give him a long term deal now (probably at a discount as compared to what he'd get if he was an unrestricted FA). So, Butler doesn't hold all of the cards.
Meanwhile, if the Patriots don't trade Butler this year, they run the risk of him playing out his contract and them getting nothing next year. So, the Patriots don't hold all of the cards
I think it's reasonable to expect that a deal could be made between the Patriots and a team that is willing to give Butler a long term deal that he'd agree to for less than a first round pick.
Personally, I think even 2nd round pick is a lot of compensation for a guy that the Patriots don't have under contract. I'd feel a lot better with a 3rd...but the tea leaves seem to point to a 2nd.

They sign plenty of guys for big contracts

Gilmore is a very good player, and Butler is tendered.
So they're going to pay someone of similar level of Butler and turn Butler into assets.
Gilmore + 32nd or 44th pick > Butler for 1 year

They let one of the best defensive players in the NFL walk just last year. They'll go after value and sign FA's instead. They have that luxury with their player development they've been able to retain.
