I'm leaving Friday to go to Osaka, Japan and Seoul, Korea. Has anyone purchased an AT&T international passport plan when going overseas? I see I can pay $120 and get unlimited calls, texts and 800 mb of data for up to 30 days.

I don't know if this passport plan can be used in multiple countries or what. They recommend buying a passport plan for Japan and then paying $10/day in Korea-but I don't know why I would pay 10 bucks a day there if I've already purchased the passport.

Anything else to consider for using your phone overseas?

Buy a go phone for 40 bucks, then buy an international Sim for another 20-30 bucks.
I used AT&T passport and hated it, I used my data using my phone for GPS

You will burn thru 800mb in a few days. Usually, I buy a sim card in whatever country I am in and pop it in my unlocked phone. Sim cards are usually dirt cheap. But apparently Japan will only let tourists buy a data only sim card, no calls or texts. You could use skype or other wifi calling/ texting apps with that data sim card.

Info on buying sim cards in japan

If you have an unlock phone, you can just buy a sim card in Japan and Korea to use.

I'm leaving Saturday for Rome/Barcelona. I plan to do the same thing I do every time I go abroad. Put my phone on airplane mode and use WhatsApp to communicate via WiFi when I want/need.

There are also plenty of map apps you can download that require no data in case you're concerned about navigation.

You will BURN through data very quickly. I got the 800mb plan on our trip to Germany and burned through it in a couple of days. A $300 bill when you get home is no fun. Where we were in Germany, wifi was spotty at best. The ATT Global wifi spots were few a far between and none had a very strong signal. I burned the bulk of my data using GPS in Munich to get around. I now have an unlocked phone and will be swapping the sim out for our trip this year.
