Seems to be common with some hardcore Trump fans around here, but I don't see it elsewhere. Is there a thread where that originated or something?

I thought he was from Pretentsia...which would make him pretentious.

It originated in England (and maybe Australia). No idea why Americans use it.

Lads and mates both come from English/German. Lad dates to past 1250 ad, and is in common use by the 1400's. Mates is middle English and comes from middle German.
A lad (s) of course is a boy or a man, a woman would be a lassie or lass.
Mate can mean both male or female. One can be drinking mates, hunting mates, etc.
