Replacing a fence... pine or cedar?

About 80 feet across the back of my lot is a rotting cedar fence with metal posts. I'm not touching the posts but should I add a third row of runners and put up pine boards? I'm replacing the two sets of runners. I have cedar on either side of the backyard currently. I'm also one to let fences are naturally without painting or pressure washing.
Trying to be as cost effective as possible without it looking bad.
ETA we are likely moving from this house within a couple of years.

I would put cedar to match everything else and I would add another runner.

Shouldn't even be a question. Cedar.. Pine sucks you only get pine if your short on cash

If you're trying to be cost effective, I'd go to stine lumber today
Tax free today, and their cedar boards are usually only 50c higher than pine
I bought all of my fence materials there tax free a few years ago

I'm gonna piggyback on this, does stine have cedar pickets? HD and Lowe's are shite for cedar wood and I'm trying to build a small fence under my carport. I've never been to Stine before

Like Dave said, go with Cedar. It keeps the bugs out and last longer than pine. Also go with three runners instead of two. Will make it much stronger. Also I'd go with at least 12-16 foot long runners so you are using less connectors and make sure you stagger the runners.

Cedar is better obviously, but also more expensive.

Another vote for cedar. It might cost more but won't warp and will last multiple times longer than pine while looking great the whole time.

Lots of votes for cedar and I get it. But if we're here for 2 more years max, is it worth it?

For only 80 feet how much more can you be talking about? It looks better, it lasts longer, it will match the other 2 sides, seems like a no brainer to me, but you sound pretty set on pine, so do what you want

I'm in the same boat. I'll be replacing my fence soon and am going with pine. We'll be moving in a couple years and I just want something that looks good.

Pine, but aging, they not going to match. 3 runners are a must.

If you're moving soon i'd use the cheapest shite possible.

If you don't have a problem with the fences matching then go with pine. The more the pine ages the more it will look like the cedar.
I'm cheap. I'd go with 3-runner pine.

Have you considered having it cleaned? Cedar shouldn't rot.

id geaux with cypress
Cheaper than cedar and lasts just as long

OP, before selling the house, pressure wash and then just stain the fence with a cheap spray gun.

I second fishfighter's suggestion, did just as he said, pressure wash the fence to knock the gray off, let it dry over a few days, looks like brand new wood, then seal it with oil based product like BEHR in transparent or semi-transparent, DO NOT use Thompson Water Seal, my fence turned out great and lasted more than 10 years, i'm about to wash and reseal it, you can apply the sealer with a cheap sprayer as fish suggested or a thick nap roller, I did over 200' of 6' fence for less than $200

I would just wash it if that's all it took but I have boards rotting from the bottom up in many places. And in other places it's so old it's just falling apart.
