I see that ranks her at 11th nationally....tied with a bunch of others....but that's pretty impressive!

Congrats on a great jump. My son is a sophomore and his track coach told him this week that's he gonna teach him to high jump. I hope he doesn't break anything.

5'6" for a junior is huge. if she can do it consistently you are talking big school interest. especially if she can maintain her speed in 400. teach her other events and throw her in the heptathalon

finds the right fit for her. having the right coach and situation that you just gel with can make all the difference.

Probably the best advice on this thread.

I'd be trying to leverage her gifts in sports to pursue a degree from a great University, not some directional LA school.

Congrats on the opportunity. Now seize it.

So you want to push her out of state or to Tulane?

Push is a strong word, but what I would absolutely want is the best education my kid could receive. Outside of maybe some engineering courses at LSU and so on, education is better outside of LA. If better universities are going to pay her to attend for track then that's what I would hope they would do, or at least reveal that option to them.

I'm just being honest that Norwestern, etc. are crap universities in relation to others and the opportunities they afford. Hell, I don't even have any intention of sending my kids to LSU even though I love it so. I also attended Tulane and would want them to do better than me there as well, while minding cost of course.

If she wants to compete in college she should consider joining a local track club this summer. Generally summer track is cheap and there are only a handful of meets unless she qualifies for Nationals. Its also a chance to get more advanced coaching, especially good for a jumper, a way to measure herself against other good competition, and a way to get exposure with college coaches.

Remember track isn't like football, there isn't a lot of money for recruiting and scouting, so one of the best ways to get noticed is to compete at big summer track events.

One last comment, 5'6'' is really good for HS, but high jump is a tricky event and at a certain point improvements become incrementally smaller and smaller. I'm no expert but some of the best high jump success stories were athletes who had decent combo of hops/speed but horrible form. Its actually easier to make significant gains from better technique that from improving strength or athleticism.

All that said, if your daughter also has decent speed she might want to consider the Heptathlon in college. Multi-event track athletes are definitely in higher demand.
