This was the reason I thought of Amazon, but I still don't know how or in what industry you would categorize Amazon as far as to consider them a monopoly.

Can it really be an monopoly on something you don't need to survive? If Facebook ceased to exist, would your life be negatively impacted?

Is there language that something must be necessary to survive to be considered a monopoly? Was Windows necessary to survive when Microsoft was getting monopoly accusations?

true, but both companies are older than fb as well

FB just released a hiring platform (careers) to compete with LinkedIn

they also have marketplace now - to compete with craigslist

you can also use FB as a search engine

i bet they will get into hardward soon (phones, tablets, pcs)

You have made the only correct post in the tread.

Monopoly:

"Market situation where one producer (or a group of producers acting in concert) controls supply of a good or service, and where the entry of new producers is prevented or highly restricted. Monopolist firms (in their attempt to maximize profits) keep the price high and restrict the output, and show little or no responsiveness to the needs of their customers."

When you talk monopoly, Google is a monster bc its got like 90% smartphone market share via android and their search dominance needs no explanation. Amazon dominates the cloud and retail but one could argue that Tesla is more of a monopoly than any of those in the truest sense of utterly dominating an industry in the future. There are other search engines, there are other online retailers like jet.com but Tesla has some things that nobody else in the auto world is even close to replicating.

1.Their supercharger network sets them up to be a huge player in gas station of the future,no automaker has even 1 charger they have almost 1000 today

2.Their battery production capability allows them to produce more GWH than anyone else and even GM with the bolt was only able to procure 3 GWH so around 30k cars worth while Tesla will be producing 50x as much GWH at their gigafactory while no other automaker even has battery production capability of their own

3. Tesla has direct sales model that eliminates the third party dealer all big auto depends on but steals big autos margins. So Tesla sells directly and that rustles jimmies in many states and hence why some states dont allow tesla sales

4. Tesla is collecting so much data everyday from its cars on the road that it has a monster leg up on anyone in terms of autonomous future cars

5. Tesla controls all repairs on their cars, another monopolistic aspect of their brand

Google competes with Bing and Yahoo. Yahoo just isn't very good.

I don't get it. When I put something into either search engine I always find what I'm looking for. Why is Google so much more popular/better?

I've had more luck finding what I want using Google.
