I love my 29er specialized

I am 5'8" + and I'm trying to decide between a Specialized Pitch 650b vs. a Rockhopper 29er both in medium frame. I might step up to a Rockhopper Sport 29er for better components. City riding w/ some moderate trails. Any advice on the 650b vs. 29er?

You need to find something used w/ low mileage. Specialized, Cannondale, Trek, or Giant.

We can probably keep it to 5.
Cannondale
Specialized
Gary Fisher
Giant
Trek
Read up on components/frames and read several reviews. Best advice is go to a bike shop and look around. Tell them what you're looking for and try out a few. Then watch for deals on used bikes.
I lucked into mine new at a discount store. I have a Cannondale with 26 inch tires, but I'm too short to use a 29er.

Really, just look at two, Trek and Specialized(fisher's were Treks and no longer made). But bikes are kind of like Windows computers, they all use a lot of the same components. You need to look at components. Cheap bikes fail bad on the trail

Yeah but I'm suggesting to buy used. He might stumble upon a lightly used Fisher somewhere.

If I were buying used I would look for a Chromoly steel frame and Shimano Deore DX/LX/XT/XTR components or SRAM components. Welded steel frame will last much longer than a carbon fiber or aluminum frame. Handles the cyclic stresses better and won't fatigue. I certainly wouldn't turn down a quality manufactured aluminum frame if it was properly butted and gusseted at the head tube.
Something like this would be perfect if you were in Auburn.

You won't find one for $200 or less..you'll regret getting a $200 bike from the big chain stores...like others have said, try craigslist..I'd recommend checking out pinkbike.com, but only if you're set on spending a little more dough..I have a specialized rockerhopper sport hardtail and it more than meets my needs

I have the 29er rock hopper

Gary Fisher got absorbed into Trek, so now it's just a sub brand. If he can find an old original Gary Fisher, go for it. I'd take off Giant and add Jamis and Kona.

Bought a 2016 Rockhopper Comp Friday for $750. Love the damn thing.

Hi all. I'm looking at a brand new Raleigh (probably an older model) for $299. Any reason not to buy this one?

My goal is to realistically log 5-10 miles per week and try the occasional trail when hiking/camping.
I'd like to take the bike out west in June...3 week road trip
I have a Mongoose from Wal-Mart that sounds like what you are looking for.
