We had a chicken tractor as well, but let them forage around the yard most days. I have 2 kids ages 8 and 10 when we got the hens. They loved them. The hens took care of all the bugs in our back yard. We had 2 sex link hens, 1 Rhode Island Red, and 2 mixed hens. My little girl loved them and even used to paint all their toe nails. We had to get rid of them when we moved. I'm sure your kids will love them.

you sure that was a fox?....when something eats the heads off chickens, it is usually an owl doing it at night.

Buff orpingtons (or any Orpington they come in several colors) are extremely docile, they would make a good choice.
Just got 4 chicks last week.

the best way we raise the chickens over here in shelbyville, is to let them free roam during the day and bring them in at night. After a little bit of training, they will learn to come home to the feed at night. we put a heat lamp in our spare bedroom and a doggy door for them to free roam as they please. every night they are in the room by sun down. chickens are like people, the less stress the happier they are.

Yep, letting them out to feed during the day is the way my kids used to do it. I've never understood the marketing ploy of "vegetarian chickens". They aren't vegetarians.

well "vegetarian chickens" are technically raised in a pen and only eat grain. free roam chickens like the ones we raise, eat grain in their bedroom but they come back with dead rats, snakes, worms all the time. they really love the variety they can get free roaming. I hate to see animals kept captive when their nature is "spirit of the wild"

I had chickens a few years ago. I live surrounded by woods. Had a large pen covered with chicken wire. Things went well for about a year. Then I discovered that the wire is not called Predator Wire for a reason. Coon or possum killed the rooster and eight hens in one night.

Building a portable coop in the La style shotgun with aged galv roofing on rigid insulation. I plan to install a hardware cloth bottom, so droppings fall on the ground. I'm making a detachable run out of pvc to make hoops to support the 2"x4" recycled fencing to cover. I plan on making a " hinged" wire panel around the perimeter to lay down around the perimeter of the run. I'll either weight it down or use tent spikes at the corners to prevent predators from lifting the edge of the run or digging under. By hinging, I can raise the "dig guard" when I move the run.

yes, but this will require some training. they do better on a daily routine, so the wknd part will be hard. my suggestion is to get a sitter when your out of town to help keep the chickens on a routine. remember...... the rooster is the leader, so thats the ticket to ensuring proper coops.

We have 4 RIRs they free range around our back yard during the day - don't have much grass left. They have always free ranged we haven't had any problems. Had to put some fake eggs in the nesting boxes and leave them cooped up for a week to get them laying in the boxes versus out in the yard we get 4 eggs a day. They have been around our GSP since they were 2 weeks old and don't have any problems with them both in the yard sometimes she likes to chase them

Yes. After a very short period of time they will roost in their coop on their own. They can stay in all week and only be let out weekends. They will continue to lay and roost in coop. Chickens are easy and low maintenance. If you're just raising in your yard you probly don't even want a rooster. They are loud, can be aggressive, and take up room in your coop. With 5-6 hens in a tractor your concern is gonna be over crowding. A rooster won't help that.

He's assuming that you were intentionally telling guy some ridiculous advice to try and lead him astray. I agree with him. If you're being serious........shite, if you're being serious, I'm sorry.

The standards for posting on this board are higher than the rest of the TD community. Be honest, earnest, and sincere. Or leave.

Hiring a sitter to train your chickens while you're out of town? Allowing chickens to come and go through a doggy door, and shite all over your spare bedroom.

Please stop with that bullshite.
