Took my wife and our 3 kids to Telluride for a week and it cost over $7000. Went to Copper Mountain two years ago and it was almost 6k. Won't be going again anytime soon.
I've skiid both, but Telluride much more recently. My experience is that Telluride is waaaayyyy more expensive. There is no way to do Telluride on a budget. The sleepy little hippy and outcast mining town is the modern day Aspen/Beaver Creek/Hollywood set. If I could own property anywhere, it would be w/in driving distance of Telluride valley.
However, can't you still do Summit County/Copper on the cheap, if you try?

I've never once had the urge to go on a ski trip. I'm almost 100% positive I enjoy the beach more than skiing. And I live 3 miles from the beach.
Do you enjoy having an activity when vacationing? Skiing gives you the opportunity to do a sport that is an absolute thrill, challenge yourself to get better, etc. At the same time, you are in the middle of some of the most stunning scenery the world has to offer. It's just so cool, looking at the trail map, planning your next run, or where you want to spend the afternoon.
On top of that, there is killer dining, bars, and places to hang out all over the mountain. At the end of the day, you ski into your favorite hillside bar, peel off some layers, and drink frosty beer on the deck, while gawking at/picking up OT 10's.
Later on you move it to the hot tubs.
I really can't see sitting on the beach drinking Busch cans sitting on a lawn chair is even remotely close to as fun. I've done both more times than I can count, but I'd pick skiing over any beach, every time. (Yes I've been to Maui, Oahu, Carribean, Destin, and all of 30A)

It's cheaper to go to Disney World with a group of 5 than to go skiing.
The way disney is raising prices it may be a toss up soon.

It's cool, but it is also expensive as hell. Therein lies the rub.
You can ski for cheap, but it's still an expensive vacation. I hope it turns into the least cool thing to do on the planet.

Like almost any other vacation, depends on where and when you go.
Skiing is cheaper in the early and late season. Most years, the late season is a bargain because the slopes are still snow covered but nobody is on them.

Some people are mountain people, some are beach people. I don't see the allure of the beach and I've tried. I need to be in the mountains.

So with all this bitching about it being expensive, is there a niche available to exploit? Volume instead of quality?

A little research can save you money and avoid the crowds.
The problem is that those small private areas don't make research easy. My husband likes to ski but I don't. I've tried researching different areas but I don't know much about skiing so I don't know what makes an area good or not.
What I don't want is to rent some crappy condo off 5 crappy photos online. There's no centralized place to sort through properties based on price, accommodations and other entertainment options for non-skiing visitors like spas, wine tasting, etc. Resorts are easier bc you can book a class of room and there are plenty of entertainment options. But the prices are ridiculous for what we would consider an "extra" quick vacation.

I guess I'm a fan of both but mountains only to ski

Skiing can be done on a budget but you really have to be living close to the mountain.
We day trip from Denver to Breck/Keystone/Vail/Beaver Creek, pack lunches and beers in a back pack, then grab a cocktail to end the day.
Occasionally we will stay the night on credit card points.
If we had to do what most people do - fly in, rent all gear, buy lift tickets, hotel, meals, etc. We absolutely wouldn't be able to afford it.

Mountains are way better in the late spring and early summer. Lake Tahoe, Tuolumne, Telluride...they're only good when you can get away from everyone else.

I just moved to Colorado for work, and as a young professional who just had to upend my family, I'm on a tight budget. I have never been skiing. Neither has the wife (no pics). I really want to give it a go soon, but here's a basic rundown of some expenses at the cheapest resort within an easy drive of me:
Ski/boot/pole/helmet rental: $65
One day of lessons: $149
Lift ticket: $94
Total: $308, before tax.
And that's all for one person. And presumably we'd need more than one day of lessons, which each take an entire day. Add in lodging, food, gas, etc, and it's going to take us damn near an entire paycheck just to find out if we enjoy skiing. How is this sustainable?

Can't you just rent some snowboards and boots and go hike up a hill? You'll figure it out.

Cheap hotel in Silverthorne: ~$200/night
Gas: $30
Food+Beer: $80
It adds up fast.

mud season is cheap too if that's what you like

I just want to hike to waterfalls and exposed rock. The south face warms up as soon as the snow's gone.

I like to raft during the summer but that's about it

I think there's more to it than just cost.
Absolutely. Even your national park example is a perfect example. It's basically pennies to enter a national park.

I rode four days in Jackson Hole, WY this year.
$127/day lift ticket.
I loved every minute of it.
But I've been riding for 20 years now.
Sorry (not sorry) poors.
