Two things must happen this summer for us to be a good team

This is simple stuff:
1) Fire Gentry and hire a coach that fits the roster that Demps has started to build. As we've said many times, he built an offensive roster for a defensive coach in Monty, and now he's built a defensive roster for an offensive coach in Gentry. It doesn't fit and it doesn't make sense. They have to hire a guy that can run half court sets and will use the roster that is built, and will get this team organized and cut down on mistakes.
2) Convert useless money into useful money. This is the big challenge. Asik, Ajinca, QPon are 20 million dollars of complete deadweight. If we convert that dead money into 1-2 players that can actually contribute (preferably from beyond the arc), then that would obviously change the outlook on the team. Those guys just being a vortex of suck can't continue.
So in short: get better coach, get better players. I'm a fricking genius.

Firing Gentry would be incredibly stupid

Well, I hated the Gentry hire from literally the moment it was announced he was a candidate, and he has proven me right. The guy is a bum as a HC and now that we have this roster it makes even less sense.

Not if you accept the fact that this team is not a finished product and want to lure good free agents to New Orleans. The roster isn't even suited to his philosophy anymore.

Is Jeff van gundy a good coach for this squad we have? I'm actually curious.

Sounds like you've been biased against him since the beginning. I didn't like the hire either at first, but he's grown on me. If you want to blame this franchises position on somebody its Demps.

On the latest BSS podcast MM brought up a good point that Jake Madison had made about how firing Gentry so soon might make Cousins think it's Sacramento all over again. He'll get over it if you hire the right coach, but Cal is probably at the top of the list as the right coach and will the team fire Demps/Gentry and pay Cal?
Also, what is the right coach? Someone threw out Lionel Hollins to bring in Grit and Grind, but Kevin McHale said he didn't think Twin Towers would work in today's NBA. The current/"new" defense rules that allow zone are a large part of what's killed post play and the traditional center's value. So maybe McHale is right. That doesn't mean AD and Boogie can't work, both definitely fit in the modern NBA, but maybe slowing it down for alternating post ups isn't the direction to go.

fricking how? Legitimate question. I can't imagine he has done anything with this team to convince you. They have been a turnover prone jumbled mess since the moment he started coaching.
I tried to give him a chance but he has had ONE winning season in TWELVE seasons as a HC. 1/12. I don't care what teams he has had or what franchises he has been with. 1/12.
He's just not a good HC man.

In theory, yes.
I can't see him and Boogie getting along though.

It is a fair point and one I have considered from the moment the trade happened. I even almost posted a thread that "we couldn't fire him now, because of Boogie and the perception"...
But it is really clear he just can't get it done.

He got along fine with Mike Malone. JVG is another lifer who seems to be authentic/honest. You also know he will fight for his players.

i'm not an irrational new orleans homer, for starters. i listen to the experts who analyze basketball for a living and say he's one of the best offensive minds in the game over emotional homers. if you gave up on him during the injury-plagued season, then your'e dumb f'er. dudes a good coach that's been dealing with an incompetent front office since he got here (which lucked into the worst (best) trade in the history of the league and bought himself who knows how much longer.

We had more injuries to key players in the first half of the season we went to the playoffs with Monty, than we did last year, so quit with the injury excuse bullshite.

What's grown on you, the alley oops from an out of bounds play from halfcourt up 1 with seconds left, or running plays to get people not named Anthony Davis the last shot of a close game?
He's a loser of a coach. Always has been, and still is. Was and still is a stupid hire.

you mean the style Gentry implemented in Phoenix that got his 8th seeded team to the conference finals...?

Gentry is the Norv Turner of the NBA. When they're offensive coordinators, their teams have success. When they're in charge, not so much.

National pundits create memes and are lazy. They just repeat what everyone says and don't follow teams on a day to day basis. They plug and play opinions and do almost no analysis whatsoever. They are fine for big pictures but for individual small market team analysis...no. These are the same people that think Magic Johnson is super qualified to run the Lakers.
Yes. Gentry is a smart offensive coach...as an assistant. There is no doubt he is a good assistant coach. ASSISTANT.
He is a terrible Head Coach. The results speak for themselves.
There is no arguing against it. He has a large enough sample size to judge.

Yeah, I'm actually interested in seeing what kind of high low, big to big action Gentry can set up. If what MM said about the limits on the last coaching search are still in place, I don't see how there's any harm in giving Demps/Gentry one more year. If it works great, if it doesn't fire them both and bring in Cal or JVG. My preference is JVG but that'd have to get the thumbs up from AD/DC who I'm sure Cal would be lobbying hard.
