Dow Chemical CEO: All For "Border Adjustment Tax"

On FBN just now...
Dow CEO said he's all for some kind of border adjustment tax on incoming manufactured goods.
Why?
Most all countries have some kind of VAT or other adjustment lever on imports. It's essentially a tariff, they just don't call it a tariff, they use language and mechanisms to get around calling it a tariff. We don't do it and it places us at a competitive disadvantage in terms of American manufactured goods.

Of course he does. He doesn't have to worry about struggling to afford everyday things like many Americans do.

Either that, or he is the CEO of a major exporter.

But it does put us at a competitive advantage in terms of consumption and pricing. Were it not for ungodly regulation and spending in certain sectors (I'm looking at you, healthcare and education), Americans would probably have more to spend on non-essential goods than anyone else, and it still may be the case in spite of those.
I suppose, the question is, do we place more value on native production and employment, or our ability to have things at the lowest price? I'm honestly kind of torn.

I was always of the impression Dow exported more than they imported. Were his comments in the context of his expertise, or as relates to the operation of Dow?

I think most of Trump's trade ideas are retrograde, but a BAT, depending on how it was implemented, probably wouldn't do much in either direction. Currencies would adjust to it. The only reservation I'd have is that an even stronger dollar probably wouldn't be great for a lot of U.S. manufacturing.

Plenty of Americans struggle day to day and qualify for no handouts. Do you think the average family of four with a $40,000 yearly household income qualifies for welfare benefits? They don't. They don't make enough that they aren't going to struggle financially though. Just looking up Georgia's income qualifications for food stamps, a family of four can't get food stamps if they make over $31,590 per year.

Fancy way of saying he is for the 20% blanket tariff on imports.
It's amazing to me how Paul Ryan railed against "protectionists" policies during the presidential campaign and now he wants to implement "protectionists" tax policy.

It's also understandable that the Dow Chemical CEO would be for this. Dow is likely a net exporter. They more than likely get their raw materials from right here is the good ole USA. This proposed border adjustment tax will be offset by eliminating the export tax. This is a big win for companies like Dow. It's a big loss for companies like Walmart who are net importers.
The bottom line with this deal is net importers lose and net exporters win.

Paul Ryan is a puppet who is willing to say whatever it takes to curry favor.

In this moment of teaching I am going to point out that you have no business being a family of 4 making 40k per yr household income.
That is the problem in this country. Because you can, doesn't mean you should.

I've come to the same conclusion.
I can't stand when he talks. Nothing but parseltongue.

I don't disagree. My wife and I make far more than that and we are one and done.
People do have two or more children only making that though and it's not always on purpose. My wife and I never even considered having children, but our reproductive superiority was shown when she became pregnant even on birth control that is 99.9% effective.

Trust me I qualified to speak on this subject.
Dow wants a border tax and so does DuPont, Monsanto and other US chemical companies.
They want the tax because it will be almost like giving them monopolies on a lot of compounds because they are they only ones that have US process to make the compounds and the regulations for new entrants into those compounds are too cumbersome for people to compete with them in the USA.

One more thing---there are hundreds of tariffs already in existence in the USA under the auspice of "anti dumping" protection.
I am absolutely opposed to new tariffs or border taxes.

We should place more value on providing our consumers, businesses and entrepreneurs with as much choice and flexibility as possible.
