What could possibly be wrong with an ID required for voting unless cheating is the ultimate goal?

Democrats seem to think that Blacks and Latinos are too challenged or not smart enough to get driver's licences or credit cards...anyone believe this? Not me!

I lean left, and I am completely on board with voter ID laws. I have no clue how democrats defend this stance

Because black and Hispanic people are too downtrodden to get an ID.

Didn't you already know that?

I'm not really against Voter ID laws per se but view them more as laws in search of a problem. You have to provide ID when you register as it is and despite what the right wing media will tell you, voter fraud is not a significant issue. On its face there's nothing really "wrong" with the idea so to speak but it does seem like conservatives want to make voting as onerous as possible.

If the liberals actually believe you are being discriminated against at the polls by having to show your ID, then they would fight for complete removal of the need to show your ID for everything...

I don't like when I have to go to the DMV. It is in the worst part of town and takes forever, but it is not hard to get your ID.

If you vote early it defiantly should be a requirement.

It disenfranchises eligible citizens with no legitimate reason to do so.

I'm fine with voter ID laws but you have to 1) make getting state ID free, 2) create a holiday or have it mandated that individuals who need to take off work to get the necessary credentials receive a paid vacation day or something of that nature to do so, or 3) create an easy/accessible online portal for individuals to register through beyond regular 8am-4pm hours of dmv/gov building being open.

I don't think it's as big an issue as either side makes it out to be but I'm all for closing as many loopholes/deficiencies in the voting process while also making sure we don't return to a Jim Crow era of bullying poorer individuals out of the polls.

Why do all the enlighten progressive European nations including the glorious Sweden have voter ID laws if it is so backwards and racist to have?

There is historical precedent of voting laws being used to disenfranchise minorities. This is not debatable. It is historical fact. This really should be basic knowledge that everyone with at least an elementary school education should know. Sad!

That video makes me sick. At some point, enough is enough.

How rotten do you have to be to promote ideas like that for such an insignificant gain like advancement in the political arena?!

I haven't read all 8 pages of this but from the democratic side it sounds like voter ID laws are a "slippery slope" that would lead to voter suppression. This sounds similar to the republican argument against any sort of increased screen on gun control.

Both plans seem like common sense to the opposition party, so would both sides compromise and allow for stricter background checks if it also meant government issued photo ID was required to vote or would this be both sides getting piss in their cheerios?

They laugh at the idea of integrity in our elections as much as they laugh at the idea of an unbiased media, a secure border, a strong manufacturing base, and keeping terrorist out of the country.
