They tend to be a lot shorter than modern games. Difficulty adds to the replay factor. A lot of games were arcade conversions, which were just designed to take your quarters.

interesting. I've never thought about it like that

There's not really any other way to think about it
Games in those days were not designed to be beaten in the way that they are today. Today, games are much more about the narrative experience and anyone who gets started playing a game should be able to beat it.

yeah basically games lacked depth back then

I know TMNT, double dragon & ghosts n goblins were, but kid Icarus? bayou billy? Zelda?
there's certainly more to it than that.

I like that accessibility, but it goes too far IMO. most games it just feels like I may as well not even be playing it. It just kind of veers into being vicarious entertainment and not that some of those games aren't great, but it just seems that's every game. I'm sure a lot of it has to do with video games being made for a larger audience than before and that's understandable.

Games now appeal to a mass market which means that you want every type of person to be able to beat it. Lends itself to easier games + all of things already mentioned.

I know one thing, when I beat Battle Toads it truly felt like I had just accomplished something pretty significant.

Nintendo actually had arcade cabinets with Mario, Zelda, and a few other console games in them but no one played those. Most of the really good arcade conversions were in the 16 bit era but you still had stuff like Punch Out, Rampage, Section Z, and I think even Contra started out as an arcade game. Zelda was really the first to have story and exploration as a major component, that was something you didn't get in arcades.

Yie Ar Kung Fu - best arcade game ever and sucked up a shite ton of my quarters as a kid.

not having places to save could be called more challenging, or just more annoying. i imagine skyrim/morrowind/the witcher/fallout would be a lot harder if people didnt always have a 5 minute old quicksave and had to beat the whole game start to finish

If you got past the 1st surfing level of Battle Toads, you accomplished more than 99% of the people who played it

These two things are the key. Without the scope and depth, you had to do something to make people play over and over again.
How do you do that?
Kill them. Over and over and over again.
I do think the sense of accomplishment is different too. Beating Battletoads or Super Ghouls and Ghosts or Contra without cheats is a different kind of achievement from beating Skyrim or Witcher.
Indie Games have done a good job keeping up difficulty curves too, see Super Meatball, 1001 Spikes, etc. Additionally, if you want to get destroyed, just ascend to any popular multiplayer game's highest tiers or levels. High Level Super Smash Bros. is ridiculous.

So... Dark Souls?

You wouldn't think it's possible to make the NES game even harder, but they did

I'm not fawning for games to return to NES style difficulty, it's just that games are as easy today as they were hard back then
Metroid prime 2 with the hints turned off is equilibrium for me.
There's a mode on BOTW that will disable your HUD...I'm going to try it on that, but I'm guessing the world is too large to not have it

Yes, I think so. Video games grew out of arcade roots. You had arcade game influence that lasted all the way into the PS2 days.

Most video games are no longer about the challenge. They're an interactive storytelling medium. The fun factory is derived from the visual, auditory, and kinesthetic aspects and not simply by the challenge of the game itself.

Nintendo games are still just as difficult just FYI
Wind Waker
Wiiu Mario
Toads game
Kart
Etc,,... Still just as much fun

wind waker is easy...super easy. I guess I was momentarily stuck getting access to the ghost ship, but that was very brief.
wii u Mario is only difficult around the final world and that's only if you're a 3 gold coins, gold flag completionist. you only get the special world after beating the game at which point the average gamer checks out and there's no reward for beating those levels. and I kind of think the only reason that final world stuck out as challenging is because it's been so long since I've been challenged
I hear the dark souls games are enjoyably difficult, but I've never played them. Nintendo may stick out in your mind because a lot of their games have puzzle solving elements.
the new Zelda looks like a nice change of pace. a lot of the gameplay footage shows link taking shitloads of damage from enemies but that may be for the demo only to keep players from getting too far or seeing too much.
and none of these games are AS difficult as the nes games. ocarina is a nice balance because 3d gaming was new, but that's chickenshit compared to something like kid Icarus or ghouls n ghosts
