I expect Fiers to be in the rotation unless he totally bombs spring training..so I'll try to be cautiously optimistic on him. He had been a pretty good pitcher up until last year
2012: 3.74 ERA in 127.2IP 9.5 K/9
2014: 2.13 ERA in 71.2IP 9.5 K/9
2015: 3.69 ERA in 180.1IP 9.0 K/9
In 2016, his K/9 dropped to 7.2. I'm not sure what caused that. If it was a drop in velocity or just bad luck. But because of that drop in strikeouts, the BAA him was .280, whereas it had been somewhere around .250 in previous seasons. If he can find his strikeout pitch again, I'd expect a solid year from him. If he cant, I'm sure he'll be on a short leash this year with Musgrove waiting to fill in.

Springer also LOOKS really bad when he's off for an extended period of time. Poor at bats, wild swings, poor baserunning, etc...
The final numbers usually look pretty good though. And his defense is always great.

We leave for Disney on Saturday and we have tickets for their Sunday game against the braves. Super pumped

I disagree. For my lead off guy the only thing I care about is obp. If he has a .400 obp with 200k and a different guy has .298 with 40k and a weak contact rate does that make him better? Of course not. Lead off hitter is all about finding a guy who can score from first on a double, steal the occasional bag, and get on base at a high percentage. To me at least.

Not sure why but George sucked at this last year. Hopefully he's figured out his lead & jump to do better this season

George has a great obp but the 180k means alot of times we might need to move someone over, get a sac fly run, whatever and he doesn't do it. You have to be able to put the ball in play man, again I posted the list of the top 10 strikeout guys in the majors, none of them bat in the top 3 of their lineups much less leadoff. Bregman was on pace for 150 k's too even though he's a very good hitter. It's just not going to be good to have nearly 400 k's from your 1-2 combo no matter how good they are. Again its something they can work on, shorten their swings later in counts.

Luhnow interview just now:
Yuri Escobar will have chance to play 1B on everyday basis or at least vs LH batters. Also depends on Reed/Singleton "competition" ( )
We were in on Sale but weren't going to give up Bergman and farm.
Correa took the team and minor leaguers to dinner last night. Noted that it's been cliques going out together in the past, but that this is Correa's team now.
Pitching is good enough to win. Expectation is World Series.
Luhnow believes in Sipp. Says he was pitching around the zone with success 2 seasons ago and was laying them over the plate most of last year. He got better towards the end.
Innes blows at interviews and can now change the dial.

Interesting that Detroit is having all their stars play right off the bat
Miggy, Vmart, Kinsler, Upton all in the starting lineup with Verlander starting. I wonder what makes a manager decide how to ease his players back into things. World baseball classic may have something to do with it as well...

Different managers are taking different approaches to ST this year because of the WBC.
Hinch said that his goal is to get the WBC participants enough work in before they go, but not too much too soon.
