I do agree getting rid of Gomez and Rasmus' AB's will improve the offense. They were awful last year. they also combined for 665 at bats, so together they made one lousy full-time player.
But we're also talking about a predicted improvement of 100 runs. That's huge. So, yes, if everything in the pitching staff breaks right and their offense improves by 100 runs, I agree the Astros are WS favorites.

I wasn't trying to argue that they are WS favorites, or even AL favorites, but I do like them this year and they would be my pick for the West.

I don't know if I would pick them to lead the league in runs, but I like that lineup 1-9.
I think the Rangers' lineup is going to blow dick, like every year. I've learned you just have to pretty much go in expecting nothing.

Houston is very close to breaking into that WS yearly contender.
They didn't make the playoffs last year

The thread is literally "who are the favorites to win the WS". I am arguing against the Astros for that proposition. I don't think anyone in the West can be the favorite because there are so many contenders in the division and we're at "anything can happen" levels. Honestly, I like the Mariners to sneak under the radar and contend. I give the leg up to the Rangers because I like full seasons of Darvish and Lucroy, but mainly they have a creative GM who will make midseason moves, plus he has two chits to play (Profar and Gallo).
To me, the Indians are the easy favorite. I get why a lot of people are on the Red Sox train as well, but I think they will disappoint. But I admit they should be the favorites, I'm just going against the favorites there.

Fair enough. We may be arguing different things. Personally, I don't see how anyone but the Cubs is the WS favorite, but I don't think it's crazy to think the Astros are one of the next most likely WS contenders.

Red Sox fan here.
1)Cubs
2)Indians
3)Red Sox
4)Nats
5)Dodgers
6)Astros
I think those are the best 6 teams in baseball this year. Toronto, San Fran, NYM, etc would be in the next tier for me.

Yeah I pretty much agree with you
-Cubs
-Boston/Cleveland
-Dodgers/ Nationals
****I would say anybody listed above are the clear favorites
-Mets/Astros/Giants are in the following tier. All good enough to make the playoffs and are a good trade or 2 from moving up to the serious contenders tier
Someone out of NYY/Texas/Toronto/Baltimore/Seattle/Colorado/STL will exceed expectations as well IMO

Uh. The Nationals. Obviously!

hey look a lot closer to a 80-85 win team to me than a 90-95 win team. And that's if Keuchel finds his groove again.
i understand not wanting to make them favorites, but they won 84 games last year with 50 games from Bregman and a half of a season from McCullers. the LH threats in their lineup went from Jason Castro, Luis Valbuena, and Marwin Gonzalez to Brian McCann, Carlos Beltran and Josh Redick.
Im an Astro "hater" and even i can see it. Start writing out their lineup and it is as of dynamic top 6 of an order as any team in the MLB. Speed, power, contact. They have 4 guys that legitimately could go 20/20.
Yea the staff on paper is prob league average. but that lineup is sick, and the bullpen has some nice pieces. You're look at 90 wins at least.

you freaking pricks want to spout off at the mouth every year but when your team is actually legit, you are wary. What in the actual frick

I'm a "prepare for the worst, hope for the best" kinda guy. Especially with how last year was such a disappointment after 2015
I guess I may have worded that in a bad way though
I absolutely believe not making the playoffs would be a major failure. But, as of right now, I don't see us being favored to beat the Indians or Red Sox in a series. Obviously that can change with injuries and breakout seasons and stuff.
The way Houston sports work, part of me expects Altuve Correa and McCullers to have season ending injuries before June (thankfully I don't really care about the Rockets or Texans idk how people can happily support all 3 )

Red Sox aren't bad off with the bats with Betts, Boegarts and Pedroia and Ramirez. They're rotation is solid too. But they will def miss Big Papi.
Probably
1. Cubs
2. Astros
3. Indians
4. Red Sox
5. Dodgers
It would take a big bat like Todd Frazier to become a threat to the Cubs and Astros.
