The discussion leading up to the release of this game is analogous to the discussion that was taking place leading up to the release of Ghostbusters about a year ago - it's kind of a unique, perfect storm type situation. Both are highly politicized releases, and are being reviewed by a media group that isn't shy about pushing the industry in the same direction as their political affiliation and priorities.
The different between Ghostbusters and Horizon is that Horizon may end up being a great - but I'll listen to a few independent Youtubers that I know can actually review the mechanics, performance, and features of the game without trying to perpetuate their own political agendas in the process.
The significance of posting the tweet of the Engadget reviewer was to reveal that she is a highly political individual; specifically one that conforms to the leftist positions on multiculturalism and neo-feminism. Which is fine - the problem arises, however, when she is allowed to review a game with a female lead and a cast of ancillary characters that are all minorities.
Is she going to actually give a substantive review of the game itself, or is she going to use the game to extol the brilliance of the empowered, independent female lead in order to promote her feminist agenda, while ignoring other aspects of the game (which may actually be quite terrible)?
Here, again, is a significant snippet from her review. I'll let you figure out which direction she took.

There's something about Aloy. I can't quite put my finger on it, but there's an enchanting kind of magic in the way she shoots a bow, speaks her mind and sprints across vast valleys littered with monstrous metal beasts. Aloy is powerful and loyal, an underdog outcast who rises to glory on an epic scale, and it's impossible not to root for her. She's as clever as Hermione Granger, as tough as Lara Croft and better with a bow than Katniss Everdeen -- and she's the reason I fell in love with Horizon Zero Dawn.
At one point a few hours into the game, Aloy and a high matriarch are confronted with a computer interface embedded in the bowels of a mountain -- the matriarch falls to her knees in supplication, convinced the All-Mother is speaking to them. Aloy doesn't flinch. She's spent her life on the fringes of Nora society, exploring caves filled with ancient technologies and learning how to fend for herself.
It sounds like a small moment, but it speaks to Aloy's character as a whole. She's fiercely independent, maneuvering around conversations as readily as she does a spar.
She believes what she can see, touch and kill, and she isn't afraid to use technology to her advantage. The team at Guerrilla Games have created a powerful narrative headlined by an equally compelling protagonist: a young warrior desperate to discover her true identity and perhaps save the world in the process.

There is only one way to respond to this comment:

I'd pump the brakes on HND being a politicized game.
If you're not getting your review from ACG or Jim fricking Sterling son, you're doing it wrong. No one takes IGN reviews seriously.

The Engadget reviewer -
Another tweet of hers -
Article defending and praising the work of Anita Sarkeesian - LINK
Now read this...
...and tell me I'm wrong.
I'm assuming the reviews from Gamespot, Kotaku, and Polygon will be similar. Slate, The Verge, and Huffington Post may even join in on the praise. We may even get a few "Gamergate" references in some of those reviews as well.

I would like to agree, but in the gaming world IGN's review is the one everyone wants to know. It is the one that is normally featured in any post release marketing.
IGN's review is normally considered "the" review.

I am skeptical about this game. Their last game, Killzone: Shadow Fall was awful. This game looks like it could be another instance of amazing graphics but poor clunky gameplay.

Everything I have watched and read to this point from various media outlets and youtubers that got to play the 4 hour demo has been very positive, many think it will be PS4 GOTY. Very excited.

Grabbing Nier before Horizon since I can only afford one for now. Guerilla is what has me cautious as well, so I'll wait for reviews from the internet and my buddy who will be picking it up on release

Yeah looks like the embargo is up and reviews are going live. Lots of good scores, 9.5 from Jim Sterling, 9.3 from IGN, then some random 2.5/5 from some place I've never heard of

I posted the KFG link before watching it. Jesus, they're talking this game up. Colin said in terms of story-telling, HND is second only to TLOU.
Two criticisms from them was that Aloy seemed to be aware of things that she shouldn't from a narrative point of view and the skill tree was rather boring aside from a couple that were essential. Other than that, they fapped to the game.
Greg said he has 40 hours in, beat it, and is a couple hours or so from platinum-ing the game. I'm happy to hear that. I'm burned out on 100 hour RPGs.
