Can someone give me an idea of how "large" the general area is that encompasses all the current communities: the hilltop, alexandria, kingdom, sanctuary, swamp-girl village, and now the new place.
How can they not cross paths with the new group until now?

Hilltop, The Saviors, and the Kingdom all crossed paths. Alexandria seems to be kind of far from the other groups and before Rick's group took over they seemed to not venture out too much.
Oceanside got their arse kicked by the Saivors so they're probably laying low for the time being. Not sure about this new group, but they probably at least know of the Saviors.
Negan's crew seems to be really the only ones going out and actively looking for new people

Best guess is that we are talking about a circle with a radius of about 50 miles centered on Alexandria.

They're probably conservative with their gas too. I would be anyways.
It's not like a resupply of gas will be appearing out of nowhere those days.

I find this new group to be quite bullshite. You get all geared up to see how Alexandria, Hilltop, Kingdom, Aquagirls are going to pull this off and then the writers roll up with a new crew that magically appears and is armed to the tilt.
