As someone who is in their early 20s. I don't see a problem with making 18 years old serve in the US military for a 1 to 2 year period.

It would increase the number of GI Bills given and it would create a more responsible generation of young adults.

However, what are some of the problems a system like this would cause? Or more specifically, what opposition could a Right Wing President face imposing a new law of this magnitude ( it would take a Republican to pass this).

1 to 2 years is almost useless unless you do something like tent repair.

I would have benefited greatly from this, but it should not be mandatory. Plus, we already have a bunch of people who hate America and I would not really want to fight next to them because of their possible lack of conviction.

It's a retarded idea. When someone suggests it as a realistic or practical idea, I know not to take them seriously.

Spontaneous Combustion of every Snowflake alive. Then add the cost of the cleanup of the mess the combustion would make. Then u got lawsuits over the liability of their deaths. There would be no one left to stand in oncoming traffic. Or make $5 coffee

The amount of empty basements for lease could potentially crash the housing market too

ETA: I don't agree with OP in the slightest. Just fun to imagine the massive melt from freeloaders

No, and whether this carries any weight or not, this is coming from a veteran. Why would want someone who doesn't want to serve the country, and may even be hostile towards the country, to serve the country? I served with enough zeroes, that volunteered, to know that we certainly shouldn't force anyone. JMO.

I get what you are saying, but I am basing this off of the Israeli and Italian conscription model

Agreed. It would most certainly degrade the Armed Forces capabilities and readiness

Yes, it was called the draft, but wtf is the point of having conscription unless we are in a world war?

I'm with you..would help undisciplined, troubled, fatherless men immensely while having the "privileged" kids give back at the same time..

Our country needs something for us to have in common in order to make our population more homogenous in the future. This would be a good start and just make it a year.

Mandatory =/= Freedom. The founding fathers were against mandatory service, so that's good enough for me if nothing else is.

Well, as a career soldier, I would hate dealing with an unending stream of short timer privates. I worked with conscripts in Korea and most of them weren't worth a shite.
