OFFICIAL 2017 Tulane Baseball Thread

This thread is for fans of the eventual 2017 natty-winning Tulane Green Wave baseball team.
Tulane (hopefully) starts their season tonight against Army at Turchin Stadium, depending on all of this rain in the area. The Wave are scheduled to play Air Force tomorrow, before once again facing off against Army on Sunday.
Tulane lost two very good pro prospects from last year's team, but their offensive production isn't exactly irreplaceable. The defense of Rodgers and Alemais is what will be missed the most.
Merrill/France/Massey will make up one of the top 20-25 weekend rotations in college baseball. The lineup, while not outstanding, will be stacked with experienced players and should hit for very good power once again. A little worried about defense at some of the important positions (mainly catcher), but should be decent enough overall. The bullpen is probably the biggest question mark for this team, with no real roles defined going into the season.
The OOC schedule is very solid. They play Houston six times in conference like usual. The opportunity for a top 25-30 RPI is certainly there.
Here's the lineup for tonight if the game is played:
Kaplan CF
Rowland DH
Witherspoon RF
Williams 1B
DeHart LF
Montalbano C
Hope 3B
Gozzo SS
Willsey 2B
Merrill P
France will throw Saturday and Massey on Sunday.
very meh hype video

In Massey will have another unbelievable year. Heard that his velocity is up this year

That's what I've heard.
Wonder if he will remain the Sunday starter all year. Merrill, France, and Massey all have experience as the Friday night guy, so you really can't go wrong no matter the order.
Tulane will now open their season with a double header against Air Force tomorrow. They will only play Army once on Sunday.
Great for Tulane. Air Force is better than Army, so playing them twice helps for RPI/SOS purposes.

TJ is gonna bring the program to new heights. Hopefully they bring back the magic.

Lots of seniors on this team. East Carolina and Houston should have good to very good teams this season. Besides that, the AAC isn't too strong. Hopefully Tulane can surprise people this year.

UCSB SD, WVU OOC series, plus ULL, LSU, USM midweek. very sold OOC. that said, tons of questions in the bullpen.
we did not have anyone hitting over .300 last year besides Alemais last year and he is gone. we will have power, but will need people to get on base. our rotation should be very solid

ECU lost to Ole Miss tonight. i think USF and UCONN will be solid in addition to ecu. houston is supposed to be good, but they were supposed to be a top 10 team last year and imploded before playing well towards the end.

Houston dealt with a TON of injuries last season, too. When they got healthy at the end of the season, they were a tournament-worthy team. Just didn't have the résumé to get in, obviously.

Yep.
Plus, getting to the tournament is great. But if you want to advance in the NCAA Tournament, you can't just rely on the long ball.
Need some guys to do more than just hit tanks.
Do you have any info on the whole Brandon Fraley thing? I know he was enrolled at Tulane for about a month in fall, before transferring to a JUCO. He was probably the biggest freshman recruit in the 2017 class.

I like going with Massey on Sunday. Huge advantage in a rubber game.
I mean honestly all 3 of them are better than the average Sunday guy but having your number 1 or 2 guy on Sunday is a nice luxury and it's something you can afford when you have 3 good starters.
I'm hoping Dehart can finally be the guy people have expected him to be, would be a huge boost to the offense.

A while back One of the dads of a Tulane on player said on YOGWF Fraley had a long way to go and probably wasn't going to contribute. That's pretty much the only thing I've heard. It is pretty damn strange

I really wish we were playing Tulane to test our recent success in baseball

Very strange. Obviously it's hard to know what a kid will be, but if he ends up anywhere near as good as his brother that would have been a great get for Tulane. Oh well.
Random comment here... but it would be nice if Navy moved to the AAC has a full-time member. I know they aren't that good at baseball, but adding a 9th baseball team to the league would balance out scheduling a little bit.

Weekend lineup is going to be sick. The big questions are midweek and bullpen. This is a senior-laden team and we need to win this year. Pierce didn't recruit and next year is going to be a struggle unless we get JUCOs.

Does he have the same fire as Johnny?
He was my favorite Tulane player to watch as a kid.
