unfortunately this is a generational opinion, as most will answer by what they've seen, heard or are aware of within the past decade or two. Ask those of us who are much older and you could include players such as:
Y. A. Tittle
Alvin Dark
Billy Cannon
Bob Petit
etc.... As they were quite famous many years ago when there wasn't the instant media and overall coverage of recent athletes.
Obviously more recent players will have a greater impact on popularity and notoriety.

The back up quarterback. And then the Pistol. Shaq is right there and then probably PP7 and OBJ

Shaq and there is no competition

1) Pistol Pete Maravich
2) Rohan St. Patrick Davey
3) Jose' "whatever you do don't shoot the ball" Vargas

To add to those already said, Jimmy Taylor.
Played for the most popular team at the time, the Packers, was a 4 time NFL Champ, Super Bowl 1 champ, and the best running back in the entire NFL who later made the HOF. I would imagine he was pretty famous.

Lombardi once said comparing Taylor and Brown, "Jim Brown will give you that leg and then take it away from you. Jim Taylor will give it to you and then ram it through your chest!"

When I was coming up in the '70's these were the guys, along with Jim Taylor, Tommy Casanova and Bert Jones.
Maravich was somewhat famous right after he left LSU, but let's face it, basketball was always in the shadow of football until Shaq came along.
If I had to name the 3 most well-known LSU athletes, I'd have to say Shaq, Maravich and Billy Cannon.

Went to NYC in 1971. Wore my LSU sweatshirt. Was asked all the time about Pistol Pete. I was amazed and how many people knew about him up there and followed his career.

I see a lot of mention for Pistol Pete. I just don't think you can pull a random person off the sidewalk, show them a picture of pistol and get a correct answer. As mentioned, Shaq, OBJ is getting pretty well known besides football, and Lolo.
What does recognizing someone have to do with. Sing famous? Most of you fricking idiots wouldn't recognize Oscar Robinson, Bill Russell, Bill Gates or Warren Buffett, but they know the name. Look at the media today. Not nearly the same as then, no tweets or any of those shitty reality shows, etc. there are books and all kinds of information on him. Ask anyone who was around in the 1970's, they knew him.
People then knew him because of his salary for one thing. Just because you shits wasn't around then, doesn't mean shite to me. I love Shaq and this is no disrespect to him in the least. It's just these stupid arse "all time" fricking useless threads that can't end in any reasonable conclusion. Nobody gives 2 shits about the NBA today. The NBA in the 80's was far more popular than today and I would bet people then would recognize Magic, Bird and Jordan to some extent over Lebron and Shaq by a mile.
Jordan owned the 90's.
When Shaq gets a fricking building named after him on a campus where people go to watch gymnastics and basketball or he owns the NCAA scoring record for nearly 50 years, come see me. EVERY college basketball player the last 50+ years knows Pete.
Nobody watcbes TNT.
