Finland's plan: Outsource all national security functions to the US, use their money only on education.

You sir, win one dumbshite award for the day.

Finland is not part of NATO and they spend a healthy amount of a very small GDP on defense. Unlike us they've gone one on one with Russia.

They lost, but they went down swinging.

Why is Finland, with marginal at best natural resources and a small population, doing alright?

Balls. The Finns leave drag marks behind them when they walk.

They may be miserable drunks but they have balls. You wouldn't understand that though.

Lumping all africans together as one race is wrong just as saying the Swedes and French are the same cause they're white. Nigerians and Ethiopians are entirely different people. Europe works because everyone is broken down into sub groups. In Africa, lines were drawn without any consideration for the people who lived there.

Holy shite. So education in the Congo isn't as good as Finlands because they are not as ethnically pure?

Jesus Christ. This level of idiocracy is the only reason I'm not a democrat.

Finland is comparable to the state of Minnesota in population and diversity. If you compare them you will see Finland is far more successful. What wasn't mentioned is behavioral issues. Those are addressed in Finland. In the USA...bad behavior is an "exceptionality" giving the family access to Social Security benefits through special education programs. Those 15 minute breaks between classes are UNSUPERVISED as the teachers prepare for class. Can you imagine the liability issues here? Lastly, the class sizes are roughly the same, but if a student has learning difficulties, there are THREE teachers that will rotate working with those students so they don't slip through the cracks. It definitely costs more on the front end, but the savings later (incarceration and reliance on government programs for life) make it worth the while IMO.

Less than 2% isn't a "healthy amount"

To other posters, the white thing is a cop out, but there certainly is a "culture" aspect to education. Meaning, as a society they place more importance on it, they actually care. Our system isn't the best, but anyone who grows up in a household who gives the tiniest of fricks about school, can and will succeed. Successful minorities who grew up in poor communities all have the same story. A single mother (usually) who stressed the importance of education and held the child accountable in the classroom. We just have too many parents/households who don't give a shite. The kids fail and we blame the system instead of the individual or the parent(s).

I would love to see education at the high school level geared towards more vocational skills for those who are interested. That seems to be an easy first step. We honestly need to de-emphasize college and begin more career specific training and general life skills education earlier. I think about my college calculus class that I had to take, despite taking the same calc class in high school, only to become a doctor and not ever need to know or use any calculus ever again. I've wasted years in school where I could have been "producing" and contributing positively to society if aspects of our education system was more streamlined.

We spend more money per student than any other country in the world. I hate hearing teachers and politicians bitch about how they need more money.

Thanks for the link. Yeah, i guess we just need an overhaul on the application and i wonder how much money is wasted on school boards. I live in Texas and I wouldn't say teachers are well paid.

That's relative. A teacher in my child's district in TX starts at $49k with a bachelor's. In Washington state where I grew up and my parents teach, starting pay for a teacher with a bachelors is $34k...if you are a first year teacher with a Masters +90 credit hours or a PhD your pay is a whopping $45.8k. Then again Washington's pay scale increases more aggressively with years of experience when you have a Masters degree and some amount of credit hours up to 90...

administration is where the waste is. It's no different than medicine (what I do for a living).
