re: Did Nikki Fargas save her job this year?

You guys who want her fired are wasting your time. Where were you last year when there was a distinct possibility of it actually happening? This team is not near the level of our final four teams in the past decade. However, they're on track to win 20 games and make the NCAA tournament. Plus, right now she has the #19 recruiting class in the nation coming in. She ain't gettin' fired. Y'all are wasting your time. Yes, I AM disappointed that she does not have the program where we expected it to be when she was hired. But, considering she kicked off her best player last season (a first team all SEC player by the way), and they struggled, and this season the team has done a complete 180 from last, she's done an admirable job this season. It buys her AT LEAST one more season.

I don't think Alleva wants to fire the football coach and both basketball coaches in one season. that saves Nikki's job along with an improving record.

I do agree with this. I think a reasonable argument can be made for it because of the salary she is being paid, but unlike on the men's side you can sell hope with improved recruiting and improved product on the floor this year.
I will say, 19th isn't what we are paying for. As recently as 2015 she was the 5th highest paid coach in women's college hoops. I'd have to assume she is still among the top 10.
IMHO she can coach and I like that she disciplines her girls, but at some point soon the product on the court needs to start being in line with what we are paying for. That's the bottom line. And I think that's fair.
She's going to get next year. We'll see after that.

My big problem w her is her salary. To pay that much to maybe make the tourney in WBB is crazy.
We could have kept pat Henry and given DD Breaux a raise and get the same results w a diff woman's coach
Crazy money for an average coach in a money losing program

The future is bright.
Players who will return next year:
Raigyne Moncrief (junior). 15.3 points per game, 5.8 rebounds per game. 84 steals, which is top 5 in the nation. She will likely be 1st team all-SEC this year.
Chloe Jackson (technically a sophomore, but they can petition to get her year back later because she was injured at NC State before she transferred). 13.3 points per game, 4.8 rebounds per game, 48 steals.
Ayana Mitchell (redshirt freshman) 7.5 points per game, 5.2 rebounds per game, 59% FG shooter...and only plays about 19 minutes per game. If she can learn to stay out of foul trouble, she will be a beast.
That is a solid core of 3 players. Faustine Aifuwa, who is the 6'5 kid who tore her knee up before the season is supposed to be decent, and among the recruits coming in, the best is a 5-star 6'4 kid from New Jersey. If they can get a couple of good post players together, they will be very good.

And she made the tournament with his players the next year. With almost no contribution from her recruits; which is the real problem with her to begin with.

This doesn't make sense. They paid her what they paid her to get her to COME here, not WHILE she was here. If you want to recruit what was considered one of bright young coaches in the game, then you have to spend the money to get her / him. Whether the program makes money or not is irrelevant. If you want a top coach you have to pay.............period. Now, if you get results you're not happy with, then you fire that coach.

That's my point.
We paid top money to get her here, but she's been here over 5 years. How much longer? Do you think she'll ever compete for a title?
I don't. It was a bad investment. We should not throw good money after bad.
I'd rather we spent half her salary and kept Pat Henry.
Or make sure DD stays.
Pay someone 350-400k and give heavy incentives

Like her or not, she can coach. Getting talent has been the problem. She finally has a good class coming in. She is a keeper.
She signed two 6-5 girls last season, one got injured and is out for the year and the other has barely seen the court.
She signed a great player from New Jersey, but for the second straight year wasn't even a finalist for the state's top players (Brown, Ursin) who both signed with Baylor where Brown has made quite a contribution to their success.

She should be canned but she won't. We've accepted mediocrity for our once dominant program

Pokey was just taking over when Henry left

Yeah after 40 years she's probably looking for a change of scenery

She is most likely staying tigerbait, but she's not doing good enough. The only teams she beats in the SEC are the low tier teams. Lucky for her that's about all they have left to play.

I certainly hope so, I like Nikki, I think she can coach...but again, bottom line, she is among the Top 10 paid coaches in the country. That needs to be where we start to finish consistently IMHO.

I was talking about general concepts.
DD is a good current example.
One coach has LSU in the Super six. has 10,000 fans per game in a sport (like baseball in the 80s) that averages, what 1000 or less?
Reward that (she makes 240k a year?)
Second coach has not made one final four in 5 years. In a program not far removed from regular final 4 appearances. Nikki's greatest accomplishment to date has been to keep her job after last year, because now, if we make the top 64 were happy?
One of those 2 coaches, one has a chance to bring home a title or two. One does not.

Why doesn't DD make more than the football coach?
Posted on 2/7/17 at 9:21 am to junior
DD has been coaching for 40 years and lacks a SEC title and National Championship. Has done an amazing job with the growth and recent development of the program.
After watching this team night in and night out, I respect the job Fargas has done. She got rid of Ballard, Baker, and Youngblood, who were all top recruits, but just refused to adhere to the expectations. She coached a D1 program with only active 6 players. Had a huge turnaround this season with very winnable games to close out.
Fargas in five previous seasons has 4 tournament appearances and 2 Sweet Sixteens. The current landscape of Women's College Basketball is UCONN, Baylor, Notre Dame, South Carolina, Miss St., Tennessee (when they decide to play), and Florida St, then everybody else. They are not on that top level yet, but the growth from last season is evident.
I just think it is ridiculous when you want to fire a coach in regards to her salary, but pay no attention at all to the current happenings of the team or women's college basketball.

Couldn't have said it better.
