The way I look at it, Martin is at the age where he is finally enjoying the fruits of his labor from the previous 30 years of writing. He's gone from fanboy-dom to mainstream popularity, and I would think that that would be a big deal to a writer's ego.
Lol yeah, I think most of us would retire rather than write books six and seven after signing that HBO deal.

Nevertheless, I'd put money on it that he's currently playing everyone--he probably has everything wrapped up and finished, sitting in a vault somewhere.
Entirely possible, though unlikely unless he's a massive troll. Some people say he's sitting on it for more money, but I don't think there's more money to be had, so the logic doesn't really follow.

Just a theory.
Good point about the money. My observation with him is that it's more about soaking in the glow of the popularity and enjoying the level that he's reached.

While there is definitely merit to that, it's also true that he's a giant geek that used to love going to cons as a fan, not a guest. That's essentially done for him now because of his popularity. Not that my heart breaks for him lol... but worth mentioning.

How long did it take Tennyson to write In Memorium?

No idea. I could look it up, but I don't think it matters.

Sorry to hijack the thread but I'm not sure there's enough interest for it's own topic. If you like ASOIAF series, what other authors/series do you recommend?

Dude has been writing his entire life and has written one of the most popular series of all time. You and the other twats complaining about how fast he writes should calm the frick down. He's a professional. He knows what he's doing. I'd rather him wait and take his time writing something good than produce something shitty just to please impatient fans.
I would have a lot less problem with his writing speed if I hadn't seen exactly how many times he has missed self imposed deadlines by constantly going on vacation/tours. And not miss deadlines by months, but years. And offer extremely shitty excuses as to why.
Not to mention how whiny he is. He has taken a month off of writing before because his favorite NFL team got kicked out of the playoffs. Given how much he was campaigning for Hillary, her loss probably set back the next book by at least a year while he mopes.
At this point, saying that he is delaying because he has writers block and not sure how to get to his envisioned end story is the kindest thing you can say.

No shite.
If it turns out that HBO didn't diverge much from his story in the past season, his profits are going to nosedive because the interest in the books would have flatlined.

You seem to be one of the few that gets it.
GRRM can wipe his arse with everything he hasn't sent to publishers, and not write another damn thing the rest of his life (however short it may be, now that he can be diagnosed by sight alone ) and still die on a bed of gold big enough for him and his ego.
As much as he struggled his ENTIRE LIFE trying to make it as a writer, as much as he was fricked by TV/Hollywood, his is TOTAL power and control, and he has no qualms about rubbing people's noses in it.
He is a writer, though, and he LOVES his series, but he's also wise enough to know that NOT finishing the series isn't the worst thing that can happen. During a talk with Joe Hill, he indicated how disgusted he was with the way people reacted to the last "The Dark Tower" books, after King wrote at "breakneck speed" after his accident FOR THE FANS and to FINISH.
And I applaud him.
frick 'em all.

It's amazing to see how many of you don't understand th creative impulse and how fragile it is. It's not like there is a switch for it.

No one is saying he needs to rush. Your comparison falls through though when he has spent more than 3 times the time on his series to date than King did.
Another part of the frustration is that I honestly don't see the longer durations resulting in a superior product. His best books in the series were the ones that he wrote inside of two years.
The longer it takes him to write, the worse the book it seems to me. It just feels different and more disjointed, possibly due to segments of the books being written and finished years from others and therefore suffers a change in writer's perspective.
Also, you start to hurt your characters with books this long in duration because you change their characterization of them mid story because you changed your mind from 7 years ago.
Maybe it's just me, but while DwD wasn't bad, it just seemed "meh" to me, and kinda flat.
And don't get me started with how he turned some of it to masturbatory erotica due to his personal issues

Careful...King actually started (finished?) the first draft of The Gunslinger in 1970, and it could be argued that he has been writing bits and pieces of TDT ever since....and still is (The Wind Through the Keyhole)
Speaking of Joe Hill...it didn't surprise me at ALL that in "N0S4A2" he introduces a character-very much a "Trashcan Man" type-a janitor, who just so happens to work for a VERY large drug company (who manufactures weapons-grade gasses among other WMDs, along with the baby aspirins and cough suppressants) called NorChemPharm...NCP...North Central Positronics.
I think the series may be completed...but not finished even now.

Anybody mention HS=HR yet? Cause that's definitely happening.

At this point, I'd like to have gotten another tale of Dunk and Egg, but I guess even that is too much to ask for.
