I'm thinking of getting the new .45 ACP. It comes in 5 inch and 8 inch barrels. I am not concealed carrying this. It's for target shooting and home protection if needed.

What size barrel should I get?

I'm still just trying to figure out if 4 inches is good enough.

The link only offers 3" and 3.3" barrels...

8" is pretty long for a pistol barrel and I don't think Springfield has a 8" XD series

Anytime you lengthen the barrel of a firearm, you improve it's accuracy. Thus the 8" will be better for home protection due to the fact it's going to be at least somewhat more accurate. And since you're not planning on taking it anywhere, you don't have to worry about the extra size and how it is harder to conceal the 8" option than the 5".

Get the longer barrel for target shooting and home defense.

Gun does not have an 8 inch barrel.

I understand but if you are going to go with that long a frame get one of the 911 frames. I own xd 9mm subcompact, xds 9mm and xdm.40 caliber. But if all you want is target and home defense go to 911 frame. Why? Because I base all mine on combat type situations. Concealable vs rounds per clip. Drawback to that- we really don't know as of yet how long these polymer frames will last. So go with the 1911 frame all metal gun. Your great grand children can enjoy. :-)

my bad....they have a 5 inch model and an 8 inch model. I interpreted that as barrel length.

That's actually not true, my brother. The longer the barrel the more the flex. What does happen is you get more muzzle velocity so a bullet will travel along the sight line further, and have more velocity at range (before it drops off).

Meh - on a handgun - 8-inches is getting near the ridiculous limit. At that point, with the size and weight of the platform you've selected, you might as well get a rifle or shotgun - i.e. a "real" gun. A handgun is always going to be a comprise and selected to be:

1. Better than no gun, and

2. If necessary, allow you to fight your way to escape or to a "real" gun - i.e. a rifle or a shotgun.

(ETA: I see we're talking the difference in overall length. Go with the full size unless you're carrying in almost all those circumstances.)

I'm not aware of any semi-auto that has an 8" barrel and not that many revolvers with 8" barrels.

That's just a huge barrel.

Get the bigger regardless for strictly home defense

I had an 8" .357 revolver and it was badass accurate. It would blow a jug of water to pieces where my .45 would not.
