Saturn had some success with it, but they only appealed to a small niche of buyers.

Some have tried, to an extent, such as CarMax, Texas Direct Auto. Volume dealers who price their vehicles as well as anyone, and attempt to avoid all the haggling. Which is how most products are purchased at retail.

Not really... Give the sales guys a bottom line price for each vehicle on the lot before they enter the room with the customer. Let them negotiate within that range with the understanding the higher the price, the better the commission. I have often wondered if they already have that price and are simply trying to wear me down by slowing the process.

People should not have to worry about being dicked around by aggressive sales people at a car dealership. Buying a car should be no different that buying a refrigerator or big screen TV.

I like this.

The bigger question is, why do we negotiate car prices at all? When I go buy a computer I don't negotiate the price, even if the salesman is making commission. The price is the price. Why are cars any different?

The biggest problem IMO is the presence of dealers. When you negotiate the price you're basically negotiating how much the middleman is going to make. If Ford sold their cars directly to the public, you'd not only lower the price of the car, you'd also eliminate the need for haggling, and in turn the need for salesmen at all. I want to buy an F150? OK the price is 45,000 and that's what I pay.

Its pretty consistent with what I am seeing for Toyota.

2015-2016 Toyota 4runner with 40-50k miles or less
What can I realistically get off the online sales price at the lot? 1-2k max?

The internet has revolutionized the car industry.
1) Visit sites to find every dealer within a few hundred miles that has the car you want
2) email each dealer for his best price, then play them against each other for a few days to arrive at their "real" best price (all done through email, text, or maybe a couple very short phone calls - when they call I tell them I want contact via email so I have everything in print)
3) Have that final deal in print so it won't change when you get there
4) Go pick up your car

I've bought my past few cars this way. Never had them try to change the deal when I got there, even with trade-ins they've only seen in photos.

I bought a new (used) car about 4 months ago and it was just an AWFUL experience. I had one dealership sell a car out from under me after we agreed on a price. I got the run around time and time again. I ended up driving to San Antonio to get a car because after the flood BR used car market was totally jacked up. Anyway, I find the car that I wanted and drove down there. The dealership didn't include in the description that there was a big dent in the interior door panel and the front two tires were totally worn out and the car was all scratched up. I asked them to take care of these issues and they acted like they were doing me a favor. Keep in mind I spent $50k on the used car and it was supposed to be "certified."

Car dealerships are the worst. I look forward to one day being wealthy enough to where I can just walk in, point a car out, buy it for full asking price and tell them i will be back the following day to sign the paperwork after everything has been printed out.
