Somebody's got to rethink the car dealership model

Car dealerships are one of the most dreaded places on earth. People love getting a new car but hate process of actually being at the dealership. Salesmen come across like parasites and the decision makers usually never face the customers. Instead it's rounds of "let me go talk to my Manager."
Eventually some smart guy is going to completely rethink the car buying model and revolutionize the industry. Sort of like Apple did with their stores. They made the buying process enjoyable.

Buying furniture is more stressful than buying a car IMO. So much variance in quality and style.

Boy, if only there was an alternative like TrueCar.

Tesla tried and ran into roadblocks with state lobbying organizations that protect the dealer/franchise model
Saturn tried the whole menu ordering system with flat prices at first only to find the american market to be set in their haggling ways

Only OT poors go to the lot. I got my 2018 Tahoe fully customized online.

I have walked in with a cashiers check and tell them what I want this is what I have to spend. they either take it or leave it. I also have told them don't bother calling until you get this exact vehichle for this price.
I have never been had or wasted a day at a dealer

I haven't had any experiences like that with my last several purchases. The proliferation of internet sales has made that pretty obsolete IMO. It's fairly easy to research what a good price for a new vehicle is and obtaining it without ever setting foot in the dealership.

Some are bad and some are tolerable. Brian Harris Audi wasn't a total headache to deal with.

Come up with a reasonable drop dead price you will pay for the car you want and go get it. Let them know from the get-go you're not there to dick around.
I've been in and out of the dealer in less than an hour on the last two cars I bought.

I would like to see a system where salesmen are eliminated altogether. Instead the dealership would have some specialists (like at an Apple store) who walk around and answer any questions you have. I'm talking people educated in mechanics and familiar with the cars...Salesmen usually don't know crap about the cars they are selling. Then when you're ready to buy, you sit down directly with the person you negotiate with. Not a "wait 10 minutes while I go talk to my Manager" situation.

I would like to visit one, the AT&T store is an absolutely dreadful experience.

Why the y obsession with the "apple store" model. I'd rather put a bullet in my head than have to go to an Apple store. Even with an appointment it takes forever to accomplish anything.
Not to mention, how are you going to make that comparisonthat when new car dealers have to take trade ins? There isn't very much comparable between car dealers and Apple stores.

I'm just using it as an example. I'm not saying that the car buying process needs to mimic apple. What I am saying is that the whole car buying process needs to go back to the drawing board

I feel like having internet salesmen for each dealership has cut down on this BS.
Tell them what you want, see what the lowest price is, compare with others in the region - done.

They won't ever change, esp. with people steady buying new cars...why would they?

For what you're suggesting to work, there;d have to be many more decision makers to be available to the customers. I don't think it's particularly feasible.
One way that might help would be if you limit the options on vehicles so they aren't as many prices and values they need to keep up with, but who would really want that?
