How many teams in history could lose their best player & still be the best team?

In the major sports. Was thinking about this because I think even if the Warriors lost KD or Steph, they would be favorites to win it all. I don't think you could say that about any other team in NBA history. There can't be that many, if any, NFL teams you could say would still be the best in their year without their top dog. MLB maybe because one player can't make as big an impact.

Pretty insane to think about a team being so good like that in the NBA, where one player can make the biggest difference for a team

ETA: Professional teams only. There are quite a few college examples because of a team's ability to recruit all the best players. More even playing fields in professional.

Alex Rodriguez left the Mariners in 2000. In 2001 the Mariners set the all-time wins record with 116 wins, then proceeded to choke in the playoffs.

Those Celtics teams would have won a bunch of titles without Russell. Not 11, but at least 3 or 4

1986 Giants

1986 Penn State

1991 UW CFB

2003-04 USC

2009 Bama

Just adding easy stuff.

Better question is who couldn't????

1988 Dodgers...they are contention for being #1 for teams that COULDN'T handle losing their big star.

No way they'd be the favorites. They aren't any more favored than LeDouche's team right now. I'd probably give Cleveland the advantage now. Warriors lack interior defense.

2008 Gator team was stacked. Percy Harvin was arguably the best player and Florida beat #1 Bama without him

New York Yankees between 1935 and 1941, the McCarthy years.
Then again between 1947 and 1958 (give or take) the Stengel years.

DiMaggio ages and gives way in 1951, Mantle becomes the star, but is always hurt.

um, no... they lost last year at complete health and more with more depth.... if KD or Steph goes down, they are not the favorites... let's not forget the Cavs are the reigning champs, not the Warriors...
