BMW is not stupid. They know that a 35% tariff is not going to happen.

So, Trump is proposing we pay more for our BMWs if they build in Mexico (cuz you know who ends up paying that tax, right?).

No. The idea is that BECAUSE it costs 35% more, you will buy an American alternative.

You can't have it both ways. You can't complain about paying more for things while also complaining about jobs going overseas.

BMW is doing just fine in America.

BMW has been using its Spartanburg, South Carolina plant as a base for exports since the mid- 1990s. Between 1993 and December 2012, BMW exported 1,545,992 vehicles from its South Carolina plant. In 2012, BMW announced that over 192,000 vehicles were exported from its South Carolina plant in 2011.

If BMW is much more expensive than its competitors, will those consumers just not buy a car? No, they'll buy Mercedes instead. Or Lexus. Or Audi, etc.

BMW wants to build a plant in Mexico specifically so they can sell those cars in the USA. Trump is saying you aren't going to live next door for cheap and sell us cars. You either sell cars to Americans from the U.S. or pay a tax.

This isn't even an American company, so why do we care?

what better way to keep Mexicans in Mexico than them having jobs??

Or just use the revenue from the 35% tariff to build the wall.

Furthermore, this is not even an American company.

So? The US is the largest consumer market. We have leverage to try to convince them to build their products that they wish to sell to us in our country

Here's what I would say to Trump:

BMW already builds over 300,000 cars per year in South Carolina, which is roughly equivalent to the total BMW sales in the US. Some of those US-produced cars are exported, and some Chinese and German-made BMWs are imported, but BMW is still making/selling cars at a 1:1 ratio in the US...

BMW 3 Series sedan there in 2019.

Good! Now people of limited means will stop over reaching to buy this piece of shite just because it has a luxury embalm on the hood.

So, why buy the 3 series if it's the same price as the 5?
