Concealed carry for veterans
Posted on 1/11/17 at 4:58 pm
Posted on 1/11/17 at 4:58 pm
I was looking at the concealed carry application and I saw that I needed to give them a copy of my DD214 if I am a veteran. Is there any benefit for veterans because I moved recently and I couldn't tell you off hand where my paperwork is.

I think vets get a discount. I know there was a vote to give it to vets free of charge but I don't know if it passed.

Vets get a discount on the permit. IIRC it's cut in half to $62.50 for veterans.

That's great but must be new. I got mine a few years back and no discount. Maybe they will give me one come renewal time.

Not saying it applies to you, but does a dishonorable get you disqualified?

I don't recall there being any discount. I know when pawpaw and I went get ours, we had to make 3 trips because he always forgot something to do with his military. I think they just want all proof of discharge you have. I think divorce papers and whatnot are required too. You'd think the background check would tell them that, but it was on the application.

What you'll actually learn in a CCW class depends a lot on the quality of the class//experience of the instructor. You might learn very little. Or worse, you might be taught stuff that contradicts Louisiana's laws and rules (There's one who posts here fairly regularly who fits this description).
If you seek out a knowledgeable instructor, you should glean some really important, reliable info about Louisiana's laws that pertain to the use of deadly force. I can recommend two such classes in the Baton Rouge area if you want to contact me @ 225-766-4422. (I'm sure there are more than two, but there are only two that I am comfortable recommending.)

Veterans get license free in Louisiana. Get a lifetime. It's free. No lie

eta: People who get the lifetime permit still have to take a CCW class every five years.

Was it always free for vets? I thought I remember my grandpaw paying for it back in 2013.
Probably the class he payed for. The license might've been free. Never mind.
Also, what needs to be done to renew my license? I'm due 02/18 and want to get it done a while before so I don't get held up in the system and it expires. Any classroom time? Or just range?

Became free in 2016, IIRC.
As far as your renewal:
1. Yes, you'll have to take a class. The class, by law, will include classroom time and range time.
2. There are some instructors out there who really cut corners on the length of the class. And there are a quite a few teaching really stupid stuff regarding Louisiana laws -- stuff that'll get you killed or tossed into prison.
The foregoing may sound overly harsh, but it's factual. You need to avoid these people. They aren't teaching stupid stuff on purpose. They think what they're teaching is correct.
There are plenty of knowledgeable, experienced instructors out there, but there are a number of well-intentioned people whose credentials consist of little more than having attended a 1.5-2 day NRA class. Some are really inexperienced, having never taught more than a dozen people in their lives.
Remember: you're not taking a class to learn how to shoot -- you're really there to get a solid refresher on Louisiana's "use of deadly force" statutes so you'll know when private citizens are allow (and are not allowed) to use deadly force.
3.You need to hurry up and take a class if your expiration date is next month. And you need to be sure to submit your application online. LINK
4. Do some "homework" before picking a class. I know tyhis iss hard to do if you're really in a hurry to schedule one. Call me (225-766-4422) and I'll be glad to recommend a couple of instructors in the BR area that I know personally. They won't teach you anything stupid. [I won't be recommending my class because (a) my classes stay full, (b) I wouldn't feel right about advertising on this board, and (c) I might be one of those inexperienced instructors I mentioned. ]

I'm not due until February of next year, but I still may give you a holler to get a head start. I only asked about the class time because IIRC, there were a few people that only came sit in half the day. Figured they may have been in for the refresher. I appreciate it

Can you be more specific without the vague reference please? If there's an instructor teaching things that directly contradict Louisiana law, I think it's worth mentioning their name on the Louisiana CHP Instructors Facebook group to try and correct the individual rather than let them continue to teach faulty info.

1. I don't Facebook.
2. I do have contacts within LSP if I need to see changes in the CHP program.
3. I assume you don't doubt that instructors are out there who shouldn't be teaching -- after all you're the guy who once posted " One thing I wished LSP did in regards to training their instructors is give a thorough explanation of the laws regarding carry and lethal force. All they did was say, "Oh, you have NRA Basic Pistol Certification. Cool. Here's your approval."
4. If you want to publicly list names, have at it.

Can you explain this? I got my lifetime a year ago, and there's no place on my license to put a sticker or something updating my license when I take a class every 5 years.
ETA: I'm a vet and didn't have to take the initial class bc of small arms training on my dd214. Also, at the time, it was half price for me.

Here's all the info you need about fees and advantages of being an HONORABLY discharged Veteran (Thank you for your service, by the way. ).

Not sure how this works -- I don't know anyone who opted for the five year permit.
I do know that you'll have to take a class every 5 years. PLUS, the regular five year permit exempts you from the NICS background check, but the lifetime permit does not.(Which is why very few people opt for the lifetime permit).
You can call the concealed handgun unit at State Police (225-925-GUNS) and I'm sure they can tell you how they document the "renewal" training.

Negative. I'm scared the next round of legislation could shitcan the deal. I'll take the lifetime option and just wait on NICS checks. I paid for my 5 years this time and I have to wait until it becomes renewable so I can get my free lifetime. I couldn't do it early.

The reason I mention it is because the instructors group on Facebook helps us self-police the instructing community. Some individuals have made errors in the past and have corrected the mistakes with feedback from other instructors.

I'm sure there are instructors out there teaching either a bare bones NRA basic pistol class or just signing certificates. I won't deny that.
Are you trying to imply that I'm teaching wrongful information because of that statement? I had to spend a lot more personal time researching the lethal force laws without having a starting point. I definitely think LSP can improve on that.

I see what you did there.
I get it - you don't like me. But my classes do not teach anything that contradicts Louisiana lethal force law.
