Not sure why Etling gets such a pass around here for his off throws and awful INTs yet others getting eaten alive
He doesn't get a pass, he's just better than Harris.
If Etling gets beat out, I doubt it's Harris. Probably scott.

i really think o & canada need to open up the qb position for spring & play the best man for the offense, don't care who started this year, who finished, freshman, senior, doesn't matter

Yep. Everyone goes into the new offense on the same page. QB spot will be open I'm sure.
You'd think Etling would have the step up being the incumbent and having two seasons and a few games of actual experience. However, I'm sure Canada won't handcuff himself if someone else proves to run his offense better.

best man should play period
and no QB should cost the team a win if there is better talent on the bench
period, the end, fini

While Harris is more physically talented than etling, etling does have much more poise, accuracy and typically makes smart decisions. He might have one or two bad decisions in a game. The int todaycwasnt even a bad decision, he just threw off his back foot trying to throw it out of bounds and didn't have a strong enough arm to get it OOB resulting in the int.
Etling has shown the leadership qualities needed at the QB position. While physically limited he makes up for it with his effort on each play. The dive for the 1st (came up short) today comes to mind. He is an average QB but won't lose games for LSU. Harris has him beat with arm strength. That is certainly true but there's obviously a lot more to playing QB than having a live arm.
Good decision making
Accuracy
Knowing the Playbook
It seems he has Harris beat in those three areas so far. I look forward to the spring and fall to see how the QB competition shakes out.
I think Harris could potentially be beaten out by Lindsey Scott for QB2. If that happens in the spring I look for Harris to transfer. Brennan needs to add probably 30 pounds to his frame. I look for him to take a redshirt year in 2017 if Etling stays healthy.

Why do you hate to say it?
Doesn't matter, I'll notify the coaches. I doubt they have thought about this

Etling is composed and goes through his reads and CAN hit the deep ball.....when he has great protection. When he is under threat regularly, he gets rattled and starts pressing. This happened vs Auburn, Bama, today after the first quarter, and for stretches of the UF game.
I know it's human nature, but to be an effective QB in the SEC, you have to have better than average composure. He needs to get a handle on that, because he isn't talented enough to overcome the poor technique and decision that come with him getting rattled.

It was a mental error because he felt pressure when there really wasn't any 3 man rush). And his lack of composure is what led to his poor footwork and the very, very bad throw.

Etling was definitely rattled in the bama game. He was missing wide open receivers. He has definitely improved over the season though.

Gotta agree it needs to be open competition. DE led us thru a tough season very well. That said he overestimated his ability today, he made some bad decisions, his arm strength is his biggest liability.
If he is the starting QB next year he is gonna have to:
1. Get out of the pocket quicker when rush dictates.
2. Not overestimate his arm strength.
3. Know game situation at all times (end of half a sack would not have hurt at all, an interception would-he should have known that before ball was even snapped.)

He did. There were stretches of the Ole Miss, Arkansas, and A&M games where he looked great. There were flashes today and against UF, as well. The problem is that the good parts of his game go out the window because he doesn't have overwhelming physics gifts, and his technique is off when he gets rattled. If he could keep a cooler head when the defense is having some success applying pressure, I think he would still be solid.

quote:Just because of that one interception, really.
But, I thought he had one of his worst games as a passer.
quote:He put up some jump balls but I am pretty sure that was the game plan. Made a lot of nice connections to Dupree.
But, today, he underthrew every single pass against a very poor defensive backfield.
quote:It didn't seem like his mechanics were off as much as he was a little dead in the legs at time, not making that last shuffle before the pass. You have to give credit to Louisville who hit him early a few times and had some solid rushes.
As much as I hate to say it, this needs to be an open competition. Etling simply isn't talented enough to not be super polished on his mechanics. The time off didn't do him any favors for sure.
Someone would have to be solidly ahead of Etling to start the BYU game. Even if you thought someone was better you would likely start Etling then work the other guy into the lineup.

Go back and watch the replay, especially the second half. He had issues with poise in the pocket. As soon as he saw ANY pressure, he stopped looking downfield and started moving around in the pocket. On a few occasions, his movement actually put him more in harm's way. He really needs to work on pocket awareness, because while our line should be really good next year, SEC defenses will get pressure.

Are you saying that BH has more poise in the pocket that DE? Please answer no...or we'll sent a doctor right over to examine your head...and he found absolutely NOTHING!

Why would it be anything but with a new head coach?

He's been with the team for four seasons. He's listed as a junior, so must have redshirted, but he should be pretty close to graduating if he hasn't already. I also think I remember that he's engaged, if not already married. So, if he doesn't think he can play in the NFL, he may be ready to hang it up.

Hell no. Was just talking about Etling in a vaccum, not comparing him to Harris. Harris is legitimately worse, so much so that even his superior physical gifts can't overcome it.
I'm not recommending Harris be the starter again, unless Canada's offense really needs his athleticism, and he can work around his limitations. I think if there's going to be a threat to Etling, it would have to be from Scott or Narcisse, and we don't know anything about how they translate at the colllege level yet.
