QB Play heading into 2017

Statistically, Etling was fine...even better than average for him.
But, I thought he had one of his worst games as a passer. His footwork was terrible and it affected his throws. He had been much better than that most of the year. His downfield passing has never been great. But, today, he underthrew every single pass against a very poor defensive backfield.
And, obviously, he made a huge mental mistake at the end of the first half, when he freaked out against a 3 man rush.
As much as I hate to say it, this needs to be an open competition. Etling simply isn't talented enough to not be super polished on his mechanics. The time off didn't do him any favors for sure.

He outplayed the Heisman trophy winner. Fact.

It certainly needs to be an open competition. If Etling wins the job then fine but he hasn't done anything to lock down the starting job.

He wouldn't have if the defensive roles were reversed.

We could actually resemble our most hated rival next year...you know who...lol...our defensive front line will be tough to run on, and White will run wild...and we will be DBU as usual...therefore, I'm not worried about QB next year...DE will be older, more mature, smarter, wiser, more experienced and will improve as he learns even more about the position under Canada...if Guice stays healthy, LSU WILL be a contender! And I will bet on it!

It's the very definition of being negative.
Don't worry about Etling. He has was it takes between the ears. Canada will work with him and help him improve what he needs to improve............

I wouldn't mind seeing him start the season as the starter and giving the young guy who stands out the most in camp a few series and going from there.

It should be an open competition every spring and fall

Season's over man. I'm thinking of 2017 already. I don't think I was being negative. I think I was offering pretty obvious criticism.

I guess that's what I'm saying. I'm not saying Etling can't improve and be the guy. I'm saying that it's not clear that he should be the guy. If Canada is going to come in and make a positive impact on our QBs, then Etling may very well be passed up.

And this is how I see the OL next year...Weathersly at RT, Teuhema at RG, Clapp at C, RG could be Campbell or Deculus, and LT could be Malone or Deculus...of course, we will have a clearer picture after the spring...but I see the OL as solid and deeper next year...so the QB will be protected well next year...jmho

He's an average QB. Nothing more, nothing less.

He's done a bang up job for what we needed. Now it's an open competition. Let's just let them fight for it.

And your opinion is less than average...lol

At QB, I don't think you want that most of the time. I think you want a guy that heads into Spring with a clear lead and a commitment from the staff as the starter.
This year, I think we want it to be a clear competition.

He goes through progressions and moves in the pocket well. He can also scramble for a few yards when necessary.
He has a noodle arm, holds on to the ball too long, and lacks accuracy down the field. He also is prone to making a dumb decision like the interception today.
An average QB. Nothing more, nothing less.

I hear you
Not sure why Etling gets such a pass around here for his off throws and awful INTs yet others getting eaten alive..
Yet he has the benefit of more qb WR friendly routes without any Miles control
Hope we have an open competition
Tired of serviceable or average

Yup our defense would have eaten him up
0 points versus Bama
Even Harris under Miles scored

Exactly
I wish so bad LSU could have an above avg talent at qb that is utilized correctly and coached up with confidence
